Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) caused an uproar Sunday when he tweeted out a quote from former leader of the National Fascist Party, Benito Mussolini.

“'We were the first to assert that the more complicated the forms assumed by civilization, the more restricted the freedom of the individual must become.' Benito Mussolini," Cornyn proclaimed.

The Republican senator apparently quoted the fascist dictator in an attempt to criticize Democratic Socialists in the United States.

Cornyn followed it with an attack on socialists, somehow confusing them with Mussolini.

As Jett Heer pointed out, it was the socialists that were jailed by Mussolini.

So, it's unclear if Cornyn understands the difference between a cruel dictator that jailed and killed people and an American leader.
