Dave Evans, a political reporter for WABC-TV in New York, is facing serious blowback on social media after he questioned Sen. Kamala Harris’ (D-CA) decision to eat fried chicken and waffles during a lunch with the Rev. Al Sharpton.
While posting a photo of Harris and Sharpton eating together on his Twitter account, Evans seemed to call out Harris for her culinary choices.
“Chicken & waffles. Seriously? For Kamala Harris & toast & bananas for [Sharpton],” he wrote.
As of this writing, Evans’ tweet had a ratio of 963 responses to just 33 likes, a sure sign that his tweet caused offense, whether he intended to or not.
Check out some of the reactions below.
Holy crap, Reverend Al Sharpton is vegan, so toast and bananas are what he’d eat. Are you saying all black people eat Chicken and Waffles? Or are you questioning the blackness of Kamala Harris?ADVERTISEMENT
And what exactly gives you the right to question anyone’s blackness, Dave?

Sexism and racism seem to be on your menu.

By any chance was this in an historically black neighborhood with a legendary chicken and waffles spot? Because I’d hate to think that you were getting offended on black people’s behalf.

Is this some sort of weird commentary that Harris isn’t being genuine because she’s eating “Black people food”?

Dave, maybe you should have ordered for them since you seem to know what both enjoy more than they do.

And a side of ratio for you Dave.

So… if she eats southern food, she’s pandering. If she eats something else, she’s [checks notes] “not black enough”?

I am guessing you prefer all candidates eat well done steaks covered in ketchup?

I find your ratio to be the most delicious thing here.
