According to criminal defense attorney Danny Cevallos, Donald Trump would be doing himself a favor by settling with New York Attorney General Letitia James over a lawsuit alleging real estate fraud rather than take her on in a courtroom.
Speaking with MSNBC host Alex Witt, the attorney said that nine out of ten cases involving fraud like the one the former president is accused of results in settlements and, based on what he has heard from James, that is the path Trump should take.
"Let me ask you about possible settlements in this case," host Witt prompted. "Is that a road Donald Trump might go down and could it separate his three elder children, Don Trump Jr., Ivanka, Eric, who are named in this lawsuit? Could they then make a settlement on their own even if the dad decides that he wants to fight this in court?"
"If you just playing the odds, nine out of ten civil cases settle before they go to trial," he replied. "And the reason for that is each side bears a lot of risk. A jury trial is a coin flip of 12 people, six people, depending on the jurisdiction."
"A lot of companies and individuals can't stomach that risk," he continued. "So, statistically, the Trumps are likely to settle. In addition, these particular defendants would not want to go to trial and air out even further all of this evidence that Letitia James alleges she has, because according to her, she has the receipts."
"That makes sense, these are the kinds of allegations that are black and white on paper submitted to banks, " he added.

According to MSNBC legal analyst Lisa Rubin, there is really only one path for Donald Trump's kids to get out from under charges from New York Attorney General Letitia James regarding real estate fraud, but that would require flipping on their father.
Earlier in the week, James presented a 200-page lawsuit seeking $250 million in penalties against Donald Trump, his three kids, Don Jr., Eric and Ivanka for egregiously inflating the value of properties owned by the Trump Organization.
According to Rubin, there is an outside chance Trump could broach a settlement with James -- and she might welcome it and call it a victory -- but it would be difficult for the Trump kids to seek their own deals without dragging their father down in the process.
Speaking with host Alex Witt, Rubin said it could happen but it would be difficult.
"How about this scenario, Lisa," Witt proposed. "Let's say Donald Trump wanted to fight it, could his kids take a different path? Could they settle on their own? "
"They certainly could," Rubin replied. " But some of the same patterns that we see with the children are all mixed up in misrepresentations by the former president."
"So for example, Alex, there are statements of financial conditions that are certified by the former president, and one of the children might attach that statement of financial condition to an application for a loan," she elaborated. "It's hard to see how certain of the adult children at least could accept responsibility and settle with Tish James without implicating their father."

Maine GOP candidate is cashing in on tax breaks designed for permanent Florida residents: report

According to a report from the New York Times, controversial former Maine Governor Paul LePage (R) -- who is making another bid for his old job -- has been availing himself to tax breaks in the state of Florida where he and his wife own property.
However, those breaks were designed to only benefit full-time residents.
As the Times' Alyce McFadden and Michael Bender reported, LePage has long pushed the state legislature to make changes to keep wealthy residents in the state instead of moving to sunnier climes. According to the Times report, LePage himself has been investing in property in Florida -- and abusing the law while doing so.
"Mr. LePage and his wife, Ann LePage, who have owned property in Florida for over a decade, have themselves benefited from that state’s tax laws while living in the Maine governor’s mansion, and again as he campaigns to return to the job. From 2009 to 2015, and also from 2018 through the end of this year, the couple received property tax breaks reserved for permanent Florida residents, public records show," the report states.
The report goes on to state that the LePages bought two homes in Florida, one of which they have already sold, and took advantage of a homestead exemption for permanent residents while making their home in Maine.
Noting that savings appear to be approximately a little over $8,500, the Times report adds that this is nothing new as the LePages have played fast and loose with tax laws previously.
"This is not the first time the LePages have faced scrutiny over such a tax matter — in 2010, Florida officials fined Mrs. LePage $1,400 before rescinding the penalty — and Mr. LePage’s focus on taxes in the current campaign for governor could open him up to attacks from Democrats," the Times is reporting. "Mr. LePage’s campaign defended the tax moves, saying that Mrs. LePage’s mother had used the Florida home as her primary residence from 2009 until her death in 2015, when the couple removed the first homestead exemption."
