Jerry Falwell Jr. buried in ridicule after paranoid rant about ‘Southern Baptist Deep State’ out to get him

Published

on

Trump-loving evangelical leader Jerry Falwell Jr. drew widespread ridicule after he wrote a paranoid tweet about a “Southern Baptist Convention Deep State” that’s trying to harm Christianity.

Falwell on Tuesday morning ignited a feud with Russell Moore, the president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, in which he accused his fellow Christian leader of being part of “the SBC deep state regime trying to subvert the will of the church members.”

Given the way that Falwell’s talking points echo President Donald Trump’s own ramblings about a “deep state” of government officials out to undermine his presidency, Falwell’s tweet opened him up to brutal ridicule.

Writing in the New York Times Monday, former national security adviser Susan Rice wondered how the U.S. came to the brink of war with Iran, after President Trump approved and then cancelled air strikes in the span of ten minutes.

"How on earth did we find ourselves 10 minutes from an idiotic war without the president having weighed the consequences?" Rice asks.

"As a former national security adviser who has participated in many decisions about whether and when to use force, I am more certain than ever that our national security decision-making process is dangerously dysfunctional," she adds.

Meghan McCain lashed out at a liberal writer who flagged T-shirts sold on the right-wing website run by her husband.

"The View" co-host objected to The Nation's Joan Walsh drawing attention to T-shirts reading "Kamala Harris is a cop" on The Federalist website run by McCain's husband Ben Domenech, and the conservative commentator didn't like it.

But wait, @MeghanMcCain's husband @bdomenech is selling these t-shirts? Are they doing it because they support Kamala? Or they're just being trolls and gremlins? Whoa, I'm gonna really look into this because...it seems super dirty but please please tell me if I'm wrong about it. https://t.co/HcZIGo5cJI

Let the debates begin: Time for progressive candidates to seize the moment

Published

on

On Wednesday and Thursday, 20 Democratic candidates for president will file onto the stage of a Miami theater for the first formal debates of the primary season. There are so many contenders that the DNC and hosts NBC, MSNBC and Telemundo must platoon them in, 10 per a night. Each debate lasts two hours and has two moderators, three panelists, commercials and theme music, leaving each candidate, on average, nine minutes of airtime. It's not the ideal format for a party desperate for a real debate.
