Far-right lawmakers escalate threats to boot McCarthy from Speakership after debt deal passage

Kevin McCarthy is not out of the woods yet.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) cleared a massive challenge on Wednesday when he managed to deliver just enough votes from the Republican caucus, along with a large cohort of Democrats, to pass the landmark debt ceiling and deficit reduction agreement he brokered with President Joe Biden, which is now expected to move quickly through the Senate and avert a national default after weeks of tense bipartisan negotiations.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) on Wednesday declared Democrats the winners in the debt ceiling fight.

The far-right congressman who made headlines last week by saying his Republican colleagues “don’t feel like we should negotiate with our hostage,” on Wednesday said his party would have been better off allowing the clean debt limit increase that Democrats and some moderate Republicans sought.

Watch: Trump lawyer refuses to say whether Trump declassified the doc in audio recording

Former President Donald Trump's attorney Jim Trusty was cornered by CNN's Abby Phillip in an interview on Wednesday night over the new report that Trump was caught on audiotape admitting he couldn't share the contents of a highly classified military document in his possession — and refused to answer her questions.

"Were you aware of the existence of this tape prior to the report?" asked Phillip.

Trump is on the hook for several crimes — even if he did declassify the docs: legal analyst

Much of the debate over former President Donald Trump's classified document stash at his Mar-a-Lago country club has centered on whether the information was really classified, or whether Trump, as he argues, could simply declassify them just by thinking about it — an argument substantially weakened by new voice recordings that suggest he knew how sensitive the documents were.

But that may not be the right question to ask, argued former federal prosecutor and legal anaylst Elliot Williams on CNN Wednesday, because Trump's actions are potentially illegal even if all of the documents were declassified.

Here’s why Turkish elections should raise alarms about Trump: report

Turkey’s re-election this week of its authoritarian President Recep Tayyip Erdogan offers a warning that applies to other countries confronting the rise of right-wing populism, including the U.S., columnist Bret Stephens writes for The New York Times.

Erdogan’s re-election came amid skyrocketing unemployment that last year topped out at 85 percent and remains a stubborn 40 percent, along with the widespread perception that under Erdogan the Turkish government responded poorly to a series of earthquakes that killed an estimated 50,000 people.

GOP voters know Trump violated national security law — but want to 'put it aside': reporter

It appears as though Trump voters are fully aware he committed an illegal act but they are looking for a way to bypass that, a CNN senior political correspondent said Wednesday.

New reporting on Wednesday revealed there is taped audio of former President Donald Trump discussing a highly classified document on Iran — which provides clear evidence that, contrary to Trump's repeated claims, he was aware he isn't allowed to just mentally declassify any classified document he wants to.

Ron DeSantis campaign leaker was invited to donor meeting by staffer he met on a dating app

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' presidential campaign was rattled this week by an embarrassing leak from a strategy meeting with donors, with leaked audio and slides showing aides trying to put a positive spin on data that clearly showed Trump has an advantage in the 2024 primary and that an unusually large chunk of voters have negative views of DeSantis despite high name recognition.

But perhaps just as embarrassing as the leak itself might be how the leak happened, according to Peter Schorsch, publisher of Florida Politics, the campaign insider site which first broke the leak.

The Trump campaign on Wednesday issued a fiery rebuke to the Department of Justice alleging the agency leaked information to CNN after the outlet reported that federal prosecutors are in possession of audio in which the former president admits he kept a classified document describing a potential attack on Iran.

Trump is heard on the recording suggesting that, although he wishes to share the information, he’s aware that as a former president he can’t declassify them, multiple sources told the cable news channel, indicating he understood he was in possession of classified material.
