Appearing on MSNBC's "The Weekend" on Saturday morning, MSNBC host Katie Phang blasted newly anointed 2024 Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. J. D. Vance (R-OH) for treating voters like they are "dumb" in his Republican National Convention acceptance speech.

Speaking with the hosts, Phang said Vance has done all he can to downplay not only the approach a second Trump administration would take on abortion but also plans to implement the controversial Project 2025.

That, she pointed out, is the GOP's "dirty secret."

" J.D. Vance is a type of person that we all know who puts on whatever masks that fits at the time," Phang began. "Nobody talks about abortion at the RNC; they pretend like it's this dirty secret but we all know about it. And we are not dumb."

"That is one of the sins of the party to underestimate the intelligence of the American voter. Just because you don't talk about it, although you kind of allude to it in the platform, it doesn't mean that we are not aware that J.D. Vance not two years ago said I want a national abortion ban," she continued. "So now he pivots, which is a J.D. Vance thing to do, and says, whatever the head of our party Donald Trump wants is okay, but that is the problem. Donald Trump is not consistent when it comes to abortion positions."

"Now the thing that really troubles me is the fact that we know Project 2025 is the blueprint for the next Trump administration and Project 2025 makes it clear they are going to go as far as not even allowing things like abortion medication to be sent in the mail," she added. "They're going to pursue a national abortion ban. So I think it is important for people to always remember what the base means."

"We have seen pro-life advocates who are mad that the GOP is not including in their platform an explicit national ban but we note once they are in the office, that is what they will do. They will try to put their heel on more Americans," she warned.

The Republican National Convention's conclusion with former President Donald Trump taking the stage to a crowd of adoring fans wearing bandages on their ears in solidarity was a little too much for comedian Bill Maher.

In summarizing the HBO host's weekly "new rules" segment, the Daily Beast described Maher as "sick of the latest wave of religious fervor around the ex-president. Maher noted that while he was personally grateful the shooter at Trump's Pennsylvania rally last week didn't hit his target, the assassination attempt nonetheless brought out "an orgy of magical thinking."
