'Trump is in denial': Ex-senator says president's own 'monster' eating him alive

In an attempt to explain why Donald Trump is not only letting the Jeffrey Epstein files controversy consume the news cycle but is also making things worse with his statements, one former lawmaker suggested he can't face reality.

On Wednesday, in the face of withering attacks from his MAGA base that he is betraying them by letting his Department of Justice sit on the Epstein files and claiming there is nothing of interest, Trump floated a file "hoax" conspiracy theory. Later in the day, the administration fired the prosecutor in the federal case against Epstein.

That has only inflamed critics which led MSNBC's Jonathan Lemire to ask ex-Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) about the series of missteps.

"Let's talk about the politics of this," he prompted his guest.

"It is so rare to have a MAGA backlash," she admitted. "I was talking to a person very close to President Trump last night who made the note that one of the things that really angered Trump is he feels like, whether it was the lawmakers who rode his coattails to office or these podcaster types who have made a lot of money off of Trump's name, we know how angry Trump gets when he feels like people are profiting off of him."

"Those are the same people, in his estimation, who are betraying him now, who are not listening to his edict: 'Hey, stop talking about Jeffrey Epstein. Let's talk about the big beautiful bill or whatever it might be.' There's rare defiance here."

"What do you make of this sort of new moment?" Lemire pressed.

"Well, the bottom line is these folks who are making money off Trump are doing so because 83 percent of the Republican base agree that this is a problem," she replied. "Trump is in denial that he has got a revolt. And I mean, this is just maybe some basic advice: when you're in that kind of situation politically, probably not a good idea to call all your supporters stupid because they know he has been part of feeding this monster, and now the monster is strong and it believes what he has said and what his supporters have said for years."

MSNBC hosts pile on Bill O'Reilly after embarrassing Biden attack collapses

An attempt by former Fox News personality Bill O'Reilly to blame the current Jeffrey Epstein chaos on ex-President Joe Biden was shot down on-air earlier in the week in humiliating fashion and the entire panel on MSNBC "Morning Joe" were incredulous at how bad it all played out.

During an appearance on NewsNation with host Leland Vittert –– also a former Fox host –– O'Reilly asserted that the accused pedophile was convicted by "Merrick Garland’s Justice Department,” and they botched the case and now Donald Trump is paying the price.

That led Vittert to throw up his hands and protest, "Hold on! Bill! Hold on! You said Epstein was convicted during the Biden administration. Epstein committed suicide during the Trump administration."

“Yeah, so?” a blank-faced O’Reilly replied.

“How do you convict a guy who’s dead?” Vittert asked which led a confused O'Reilly to state, "He was convicted, I believe, under Merrick Garland’s Justice Department. Am I wrong on that? "

After sharing the clip, MSNBC cut back to the co-hosts where Mika Brzezinski could be seen rolling her eyes and Jonathan Lemire was visibly laughing.

Finger to his lips, Joe Scarborough offered, "Wow. A lot of that going around, a lot of that going around. So I wonder, I'm just wondering, Willie [Geist], what would people say if Joe Biden had gotten something that terribly wrong?"

"You know, because we heard from Donald Trump yesterday that it was all the Democrats; it's the Democrats, the Democrat conspiracy theory, the Democrats this, the Democrats that forgetting that his own administration was the one that actually prosecuted Epstein and Epstein died while he was in custody while Donald Trump was still president," he added.

After Scarborough admitted, "It's a very sad thing to watch," Geist explained, "I think when you've gotten away for a decade now of telling your political movement fables and being cheered for it and supported and having those repeated, you just assume that the next fable you tell will land the same way."

"But in this case, Donald Trump's supporters are so invested in this. Jeffrey Epstein story and have been for so long," he added.

President Donald Trump stepped into an easily avoidable but highly damaging trap with his handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case, according to new posts.
