‘Chilling’: Ex-FBI official says UnitedHealth CEO's killer may be a trained 'professional'

Shocking video of the moment UnitedHealthcare’s CEO was gunned down on a New York City sidewalk offered new clues into the suspect still at large for the brazen Wednesday morning assassination.

Former FBI Acting Director Andrew McCabe said the suspect’s calmness during what appeared to be a calculated killing leads him to believe the trigger wasn’t pulled by a novice and could “possibly even [be] a professional.”

“It looks very disciplined. It looks very organized. It looks like he probably has some degree of training,” McCabe told CNN’s Anderson Cooper. The veteran law enforcement official added: “It’s striking to me also that he is so calm.”

McCabe continued his analysis of the video released by the New York Police Department Wednesday evening by suggesting the shooter’s stance, positioning of his arms and grip on the weapon “are all things that you learn when you're learning marksmanship.”

“Bottom line is he looks like someone who's had training maybe law enforcement training, maybe military training, or maybe private training,” McCabe told anchor Anderson Cooper.

He added that based on what he learned in the hours after insurance executive Brian Thompson’s killing, the suspect likely had a certain extent of “intelligence about when the victim would arrive.” That could come from either an insider or his surveillance, he noted.

“So in all total Anderson, it looks to me to be very disciplined, very organized, well trained, possibly even professional – although we don't know that at this point – but it's chilling. It’s an absolutely chilling video to watch.”

Thompson arrived around 6:46 a.m. at the Hilton Hotel for a conference when the gunman opened fire and fled, according to news reports. The 50-year-old was rushed to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead.
