A Vermont Democratic lawmaker launched a stinging takedown of congressional Republicans on Monday in an impassioned House floor speech where she castigated the majority party while delivering what she called “the cold hard truth” about the Russia-Ukraine war.
“Russia invaded the sovereign nation of Ukraine,” Rep. Becca Balint (D-VT) said Monday. “Vladimir Putin is the aggressor, and I stand here on the House floor to say our president will not re-write the past.”
Balint in her speech went on to rail against Putin for “mercilessly” continuing the deadly war for over three years before turning her focus to domestic politics and airing her grievances with her Republican colleagues and President Donald Trump.
“It’s sick. We are standing with dictators and against our allies?” Balint asked. “I never thought I would see the day when our president would be a puppet for a dictator.”

She then addressed Republicans directly: “To my Republican colleagues, did you ever imagine that you would be in a party that stands on the side of dictators… Aren't you embarrassed by what you've become? It's revolting to watch my colleagues side with Russia because Trump said so.”
The remarks from the two-term lawmaker followed a deluge of criticism that came after the Trump administration opposed a United Nations resolution condemning Russian aggression against Ukraine – which aligned the United States with authoritarian regimes including Russia, North Korea, Belarus and Hungary.
Balint later posted a C-SPAN clip of her speech to her X account.
"I’m not going to let Trump rewrite history," she told her followers.
