Brian Kemp may get primary challenge from former GOP senator whose reelection bid got tanked by Trump: report

On Wednesday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Greg Bluestein reported that former Sen. David Perdue (R-GA) is considering a primary challenge to Republican Gov. Brian Kemp.

"In recent weeks, Perdue has called donors and other allies to float the idea, according to eight people who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss confidential matters. Several of them said he's 'conflicted' about a run, while others say he's leaning toward a challenge," reported Greg Bluestein. "Perdue has kept quiet publicly about his plans, and he declined to comment. But he remains close to former President Donald Trump, who encouraged the former U.S. senator to run at a rally in Middle Georgia in September. Trump's allies also recently leaked polls that show Perdue in a strong position."

Perdue narrowly lost his Senate seat Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) in a January runoff, after a fraught and controversial campaign that included a racist attack on Kamala Harris.

In recent months, Kemp has fallen from grace in pro-Trump circles because he told the former president he had no power to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election — although he has sought to mend fences by signing one of the most restrictive voting laws in the country.

He has already drawn a primary challenger from Vernon Jones, a former Democratic state legislator who left the party over his support for Trump.
