CNN does brutal rundown of Trump administration's 'best' people: ‘They’re the best — at pleading guilty'

During the 2016 election, President Donald Trump regularly boasted that he only hired "the best people."

Given that his former campaign chairman and his former longtime attorney are both headed to prison, CNN's John Avlon decided to do a rundown of all of the most corrupt and inept people whom Trump has hired -- and the results looked very bad for the president.

"Remember, this is not a complete list," Avlon said before digging in. "We have Michael Cohen, the president's former fixer, yesterday pleading guilty to tax evasion, lying to a bank and campaign finance violations, which included paying off two women to influence an election, directly implicating President Trump in both payments. Now, Paul Manafort, Trump's former campaign chairman, yesterday found guilty of tax fraud, hiding foreign bank accounts and bank fraud."

Avlon went on to point out that Trump's poor judgement in hiring people extended well beyond these two latest criminal convictions, however.

"We've got Michael Flynn, former national security adviser, pled guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with the Russian ambassador," he continued. "George Papadopoulos, former senior policy adviser to the campaign, pled guilty to lying to the FBI."

Avlon still wasn't finished.

"Folks, these are just the convicts, not the people who left the administration under a cloud," he said. "The former EPA administrator, Scott Pruitt, forced out in the wake of 14 ongoing investigations, from first-class travel to the $40,000 secure phone booth... Tom Price, the former HHS secretary, forced out after $300,000 in tax-provided charter flights."

At the end of the segment, CNN's Alisyn Camerota joked that there was still a way to spin this as a positive for the president.

"The best at what?" she asked rhetorically. "Pleading guilty."
