MSNBC'e Joe Scarborough condemned Donald Trump supporters for laughing at his "sick" joke about a violent attack on Nancy Pelosi's husband.
The former president brazenly mocked the former House speaker and her husband Paul Pelosi, who was attacked in their home last October by a hammer-wielding assailant, and the "Morning Joe" host was sickened that the rowdy crowd of California Republicans laughed and jeered Trump's remarks.
"He mocked and ridiculed Paul Pelosi and laughed about it, told jokes about it, and the sickness was, of course, that he's doing that mocking and ridiculing an 82-year-old man that had a break-in in his house and had a hammer slammed into his head and just the worst -- just a nightmare for any family," Scarborough said, "and the Republican leader is mocking and ridiculing an 82-year-old man who was a victim of political violence. Again, here is the sick part, really sick – there's a lot of sick parts. The sickest part is the crowd was laughing along to the joke."
Scarborough conceded that political candidates had always told jokes to deflate their opponents, but he said this was different and much darker.
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
"Here in Donald Trump's Republican Party, an 82-year-old man having his home broken into by just a deranged attacker, and then getting hit in the head repeatedly by a hammer, first of all a politician's punch line, but again, just showing how sick this MAGA crowd has gotten," Scarborough said. "They're laughing in the audience. On top of that, you know, he's talking about you got to do these mother-blankers. He's talking -- I don't know if he thinks he's a rapper now, but again, this is -- and these are people that say, 'Oh, we're upright Christians, we support Donald Trump, and we're' -- yeah, they support violence? They want their kids going around saying the things that Donald Trump says? I don't think so."
Trump profanely threatened to prosecute President Joe Biden if he's re-elected, saying "let's indict the motherf---er," and Scarborough suggested he was explicitly calling for violence and blatant abuse of power to distract from the myriad legal problems consuming him.
"This time he's saying mother F-er, right," Scarborough said, "and most importantly this time, he's now so desperate to up up the heat, up the temperature, up the calls for political violence that he's mocking and ridiculing an 82-year-old man getting beaten up and the audience is laughing along."
