‘Duck Dynasty’ star Phil Robertson offers to teach Trump about Christian love at Cannes

Reality TV star Phil Robertson took a break from promoting his new documentary comparing Miley Cyrus to history's worst mass murderers to appear on Fox News, where he offered to help Donald Trump learn how to be a Christian.

The 70-year-old Robertson appeared Wednesday morning on "Fox and Friends" from a boat dock in Cannes, France, where he is promoting the Citizens United documentary "Torchbearer" -- a film jeremiad against what he perceives as an immoral pop culture.

Robertson decided to back Trump after Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) dropped out of the Republican presidential race, although he apparently thinks his fellow reality TV star needs some spiritual assistance.

"I'll make a valiant attempt behind the scenes, you understand, to sit down with Donald with a Bible in between us, and I might can help him along with concepts like loving your enemies, loving your god, loving your neighbor," Robertson told "Fox and Friends." "Even your enemies, forgive them and move on. I may can help him in that area. I can see it now, Trump wins and the camera's panning and his spiritual advisor is me."

Robertson, who is as well known for his fire-and-brimstone rants against LGBT people and atheists as he is for his family's A&E show "Duck Dynasty," discussed his documentary movie appearance and other issues earlier this week with The Hollywood Reporter.

"When you remove the God of the Bible and suppress the truth and allow men and women to determine right and wrong, historically speaking, it always ends in carnage and murder — Hitler, the Caesars of Rome, the French Revolution, ISIS," Robertson told the newspaper. "Man, there has been a slaughterhouse on planet Earth, and the common denominator is the removal of God."

The reporter asked why "Torchbearer" segues from those historic mass murderers to Miley Cyrus, the pop singer and former child star.

"The founding fathers were godly men, and I’m no different," Robertson said. "Our founders said once your religion goes, then your morality goes, then your freedom goes, and you see with Bernie Sanders they’re wanting to get rid of the Republic and replace it with socialism. America is floundering in sin, and I know that’s a unique word in your part of the country. If you don’t see the decadence around you, dude, promoted by Miley Cyrus and others in Hollywood, then I don’t know what to tell you. If you got an argument in favor of decadence, then give it to me."

Robertson said he became a Republican when he found religion at 28 because he supported the GOP's position on abortion, but he admits that Hillary Clinton would probably be a better president than Trump -- except for one issue.

"Her record is long, and she’s already proven herself," Robertson said. "I know which way we’ll go with her, but I’m not sure with Donald. And remember, I’m a hunter. We shoot squirrels and ducks and eat 'em, and she says she'll take our guns. All we’re doing is shooting targets, and alligators and cottonmouth snakes, and she wants to take that away from us?"

Not surprisingly, the conservative Christian has strong feelings about which public restrooms transgender people should use.

"What’s behind it is removing male and female, like with same-sex marriage, once you get that out of the way, what you open the door for is sexual free-for-all, and depravity goes mainstream," Robertson said.
