Republican lawmakers are laughing at President-elect Donald Trump and the "clown" he wants to see appointed the nation's top law enforcement officer, according to Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA).
Swalwell on Wednesday scoffed at Trump's chosen attorney general, former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), and his attempts to bury a potentially damning Ethics committee report on accusations he had sex with a minor.
"My Republican friends in Congress are laughing that he is the appointee," Swalwell said. Of voters, he added, "They see this clown being appointed and they're like, 'This isn't what we voted for, this isn't the mandate that we gave you."
Swalwell, during his appearance on CNN, openly mocked Gaetz and his allies' efforts to keep the Ethics committee from reaching the public despite mounting curiosity about its contents.
That curiosity has only been piqued by reports that "damaging" testimony has been accessed by a hacker and a lawyer's revelation that his clients told the committee Gaetz had paid them for sex.

While Gaetz denies accusations linked to the probe, Swalwell, a former prosecutor, argued attempts to hide the report would play badly in a court of law.
"This is about his ability to be America's top law enforcement officer," Swalwell said. "When you destroy evidence or you hide evidence in a court of law, the judge will say, you can use that to infer somebody is guilty because only somebody who's guilty would want to destroy evidence."
Swalwell urged Trump and his allies to supply the transparency the president-elect promised voters during his campaign.
Otherwise, Swalwell warned, voters might begin to draw unfavorable comparisons between his administration and an authoritarian regime.
"The American people won't take it seriously and then we start to look like other countries where you don't have faith in the people who lead us like China, like Russia," Swalwell said.
"That's a disservice to the millions of Americans who voted for Donald Trump."
