George Zimmerman injured in shooting amid ongoing dispute with another man in Florida

George Zimmerman was wounded Monday afternoon during a shooting in Florida.

Police said Zimmerman received minor facial injuries, reported WFTV-TV, and was taken to a local hospital in Sanford.

Zimmerman was not shot. His lawyer told the Associated Press that he was hit with shards of glass from his vehicle's windshield. He has been released from the hospital.

Zimmerman was involved in a shooting in Lake Mary about 12:45 p.m. as part of an ongoing dispute with another man in an apparent "road rage incident," police said.

A bullet hole was spotted in the passenger side window of Zimmerman's truck, which WESH-TV said viewers might recognize from previous incidents.

Police Chief Steve Bracknell told the Orlando Sentinel that Zimmerman did not shoot, but was fired upon by the other driver. Bracknell said the alleged gunman is cooperating with police, but Zimmerman is not answering any questions.

The man who called 911 to report the shooting told CNN that the alleged gunman ran up to him and said, "I just shot George Zimmerman, call 911!" According to CNN executive editor Ram Ramgopal, the alleged gunman claimed he was driving when Zimmerman waved a gun, so he shot Zimmerman.

"This is very crazy. I mean it took me 3 or 4 times to comprehend what he was saying," the man who called 911 told CNN.

A witness said he recognized Zimmerman, who got out of his truck and walked to an ambulance that happened to be parked nearby.

“He walked normally into the ambulance, so he wasn't being helped or nothing,” said witness Ricardo Berrare.

Zimmerman was acquitted in the 2012 shooting death of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin after claiming he acted in self-defense.

The Justice Department launched a civil rights investigation, but found insufficient evidence to pursue federal criminal charges against Zimmerman.

He said in March that he had a clear conscience in the shooting, which he described as part of God's plan.

Since then, Zimmerman has been arrested three times on domestic violence charges, but he was never prosecuted because the victims recanted in each case.

Zimmerman was also accused of threatening to shoot another driver in 2014. In that incident, the man called 911 to report Zimmerman, but decided not to press charges against him.

Update, 4:55 p.m. EST: Authorities identified Matthew Apperson as the man who allegedly shot at Zimmerman. Heavy.com reported that the two men were involved in separate incidents last September. Apperson said after one encounter that Zimmerman threatened to shoot him.

The Huffington Post reported at the time that, according to Zimmerman, Zimmerman harangued him while both men were at a stop light, saying, "Do you know who I am? I'll f*cking kill you."

Two days later, Apperson told police that Zimmerman was stalking him.
