James Clapper reveals he's 'offended' but not surprised by Trump's 'distorted' attacks on the intelligence committee

Former director of national intelligence, James Clapper, responded to President Trump's "distorted" reviews of his new book "Facts and Fear," in an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper.

"If you look at Clapper, he sort of admitted they had spies in the campaign yesterday. Inadvertently. But I hope it is not true. But it looks like it is," President Trump said.

Clapper said the intelligence committee did not spy on the president during his campaign.

"We did not. And that is -- that is a distortion of what I said. I had an aversion to the use of the term and thought I made that clear," Clapper said in the interview.

Trump supporters have also spoken out in criticism against Clapper.

"Allies of the president, including former campaign staffer Michael Caputo and former house speaker Newt Gingrich have been brutal attacking you," Tapper said.

Gingrich said he was  'astounded' that Clapper appears to be "dishonest" and "incompetent."

"I take umbrage with that. I didn't commit a crime. I was trying to explain my understanding of what this informant was doing. And I wasn't spying on the campaign. I take exception to it. And I don't particularly want to dignify it by talking about it too much," Clapper said.
