Jill Stein reaches $1M in just a few hours of #Recount2016 announcement

Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein wants a recount in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania and has asked supporters to donate to her cause.

"This effort to ensure election integrity is in your hands!" Stein says on her fundraising page. "We need to raise over $2 million by this Friday, 4pm central. In true grassroots fashion, we’re turning to you, the people, and not big-money corporate donors to make this happen."

In just a few hours since the announcement, Stein reached $1 million and Twitter was trending with "Jill Stein" and #Recount2016. The number is astounding given that Stein only raised $3.5 million for the entire election.

While many states, like Florida, automatically trigger a recount when the election is close, Wisconsin only holds recounts if a candidate requests that it occur.

“There are only a few days remaining,” said Lynn Sweet, bureau chief for the Chicago Sun-Timeson CNN Wednesday. “You can’t wait forever. There are only a few days left in each of these states. The main ones they are talking about are Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio. If they’re going to do something, they have to do it in the next few days.”

Former Sec. Hillary Clinton is now has a 2 million-vote majority of the popular vote. The number is the largest margin in history for a candidate to have lost by.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation reported that technology security experts are concerned about electronic voting machines that don't provide a paper verification to do an audit.

"There is precedent for hackers attempting to influence elections by tampering with voting infrastructure: Ukraine's 2014 election came under attack from pro-Russian hackers, and this spring Bloomberg reported on how a team of hackers targeted election throughout Latin America," the EFF wrote. "There was also plenty of hacking related to the 2016 US election, with two separate major dumps of political emails and several reports of attempted attacks on election systems. These attacks tell us that hacking groups, some of whom may be nation states, were particularly interested in affecting this election's outcome."

UPDATE: As of 12:30 a.m. Stein was nearly to her goal at $2.1 million, which is approximately $5,000 per minute.
