Trump lawyers claim president will talk to Mueller -- but he can't ask questions about anything since 2017

A CNN report Tuesday revealed that President Donald Trump's legal team has told special counsel Robert Mueller that they'll answer his questions, but he won't answer anything about incidents after January 20, 2017.

"We said we wanted the questions limited to Russian collusion," a sources with knowledge of the strategy told CNN.

Mueller's investigation deals with a plethora of issues, but where it concerns Trump specifically is on the issue of obstructions of justice. There were no possible incidents of obstructions of justice until after Trump took office.

Attorney Rudy Giuliani told the New York Times that Mueller intends to wrap up the obstruction investigation by Sept. 1, however, if the special counsel can't interview Trump on obstruction, that may no longer be the case.

Trump's lawyers are also thinking about a combination of in-person meetings and written statements for Mueller.

Sources have said, however, that Mueller will not accept written answers to questions.

Mueller's office refused to comment.
