'Read the Constitution': Mike Pence tells MAGA devotee why he couldn't have blocked Biden's win
July 06, 2023
Former Vice President Mike Pence this week patiently explained to a MAGA devotee in Iowa why he did not have the power to unilaterally reject President Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 election.
During a campaign stop, Pence was confronted by a woman who was angry that he disobeyed Trump's commands to ignore the certified results of the 2020 election and send the results back to Trump-allied state legislatures that would have presumably reinstalled him as president.
Pence went through the various steps that the Trump campaign took to legally challenge some of the results in court, and in particular the mass use of mail-in ballots that were implemented during the coronavirus pandemic.
When those challenges all failed in court, Pence said, then he had little recourse but to obey the Constitution.

"The Constitution of the United States, Article II, it is the job of the vice president to serve as the presiding officer at the joint session where you open and count the votes," he said. "Don't take my word for it -- go read the Constitution... The Constitution is very clear."
Pence's refusal to unilaterally reject certified electoral college votes sparked outrage from Trump and his supporters, some of whom rioted at the United States Capitol and called for the then-vice president's hanging.
