Republican uses frequently cited Holocaust quote to sell merch on his campaign site after remembrance day

The day after Holocaust Remembrance Day, North Carolina Republican Rep. Madison Cawthorn used a commonly cited poem from German Lutheran pastor Martin Niemöller to sell merchandise on his campaign website.

"First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me."

Cawthorn, who, ironically has attacked socialists and Jews, created his own version of the poem to sell t-shirts.

Cawthorn described Adolf Hitler as "the Fuhrer" while he was visiting the former Nazi leader's German vacation home. He claimed it had "been on my bucket list for awhile (sic)."

The newly-elected Congressman adds to a list of controversial Republicans who have caused problems for the GOP brand over the past week. Another is Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who was outed for calling for the execution of Democrats, calling school shootings "false flags" and claiming 9/11 was an inside job on her social media. While she hasn't apologized or denounced her remarks, she has blamed her "social media teams" for the posts.

Thus far, neither the Republican Party nor the GOP leadership has condemned the comments.
