A Republican congressman got fact-checked on live television for casting blame for the economy away from President Donald Trump.
Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-FL) appeared Wednesday on CNN's "Inside Politics," where he was asked about the Republican message on affordability heading into November's midterm election.
"I thinkwe need to remind people exactlyhow we got into this situation," the GOP congressman said. "You recall during the Bidenadministration, we had inflationup to 9 percent and higher gas priceswere over $5 a gallon, and sothe mess was created by the Democrats. It's really funny. The Democrats, you always got to listento what they're saying becausewhat they're saying is whatthey're doing, and soaffordability, unaffordabilitywas really created by the Democrats, and we're going togo back to 9 percent inflation, and gas prices togo over $5 a gallon becauseremember, they want to do the Green New Deal."
"They want toreally hamper our oiland gas industry so that energycosts skyrocket," Giminez added. "Then they wantto do out-of-control spendinglike they did when they were inpower, and so all of that, you know, we got to remind people that we're not aboutthat."
Host Dana Bash cut in with a fact check on the Florida Republican's claims – and a reminder of the current year.
"I just need to get in therebecause, certainly, theaffordability crisis in 2024 wasa big part of the reason President Trump won," Bash said. "But Idon't need to remind you thatsince he has been in office, the economic troubles, nevermind sort of the way that itlooks on the statistics charts, but how people feel, is notgreat, and part of the reason isthe president's policy ontariffs, and also thepresident's policy in the warin Iran. "
"I understand that it's politically imperative for Republicans to go back to the Biden administration," she added. "But [Trump's]been in office for almost twoyears!"
