GOP's Ron Johnson responds to good news on vaccines with unhinged rant about hydroxychloroquine

President Joe Biden on Thursday night delivered good news on America's vaccination campaign, as he announced that every American should be eligible to sign up for a vaccine by May 1st.

Instead of celebrating this news, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) took to Twitter Friday to bitterly complain that Biden and the Centers for Disease Control had not embraced hydroxychloroquine, the anti-malarial drug that former President Donald Trump falsely claimed would be a "game changer" for treating COVID-19.

"Does Joe Biden wants (sic) us to continue living in a state of fear?" Johnson wrote. "This pandemic could have been defeated months ago & tens of thousands of lives saved if courageous frontline doctors and early treatment had not been censored and silenced as we awaited a vaccine."

Johnson then linked to video of Dr. Peter McCullough testifying before the Texas Senate about the benefits of hydroxychloroquine in treating the novel coronavirus.

However, multiple studies have found that hydroxychloroquine is not effective at treating COVID-19, and Trump himself was not treated with the drug when he was hospitalized after coming down with COVID-19 last October.

As Dr. Anthony Fauci testified before the House of Representatives last year, "the overwhelming cumulative evidence of properly conducted randomized controlled trials indicate no therapeutic efficacy for hydroxychloroquine" in COVID-19 patients.
