Shep Smith mocks Ted Cruz for lying about 2013 shutdown: 'I heard him say it today so I know it’s true'

During a Monday afternoon segment about the bipartisan deal slated to end the three-day government shutdown, Fox News' Shep Smith criticized supporters of President Donald Trump still holding out against the recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

"There is a part of the president's base that says 'that is amnesty, no how, no way,' and it seems that is the part, that sliver of the president's base that has won the day," he said. "Come on!"

That anti-DREAMer sentiment, Smith's producer Chad Pergram noted, resulted in a "rather extraordinary scene that not a lot of people picked up on last night." He then described a behind-the-scenes Sunday night showdown between Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC), the chairman of the House Freedom Caucus and opponent of DACA, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), when the latter "intercepted" the majority leader just before his speech on the Senate floor promising to bring a DACA bill forward.

"He didn’t make a commitment to one bill or another," Meadows told the Huffington Post after McConnell's speech, "which is a good sign."

Later in the segment, Smith took a jab at Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), who was caught in a lie after he claimed to be against government shutdowns — despite voting for one in 2013.

"[Cruz is] very much against shutdowns," Smith joked. "I heard him say it today so I know it's true."
