Here’s how Trump’s time in the White House could expose him to new criminal charges

Prosecutors are ramping up their investigations into former President Donald Trump, and Trump's time in the Oval Office could expose him to additional legal charges.

CNN reports that prosecutors in New York are considering expanding the statute of limitations against Trump by "using a section of New York criminal procedure law that they successfully applied in their sexual assault case against disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein to charge him with earlier conduct."

Essentially, the law allows prosecutors to extend the statute if a defendant has been "continuously" out of state, which Trump obviously was during his four years in the White House.

Additionally, legal experts tell CNN that prosecutors could extend the statute of limitations even further thanks to an executive order issued by Gov. Andrew Cuomo last year that "paused the clock on the statute of limitations to address the coronavirus pandemic's impact on the New York court system."

Prosecutors are currently conducting a broad investigation into Trump's finances, as attorneys working for Manhattan DA Cy Vance have told courts they are probing whether Trump committed tax fraud by lying about the value of his properties.
