'Out-and-out stupid': Morning Joe says a third-grader could defend Trump better than Giuliani

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough burst into laughter after watching Rudy Giuliani contradict himself during an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper.

The former New York City mayor denied that President Donald Trump had spoken to former FBI director James Comey about an investigation into disgraced national security adviser Mike Flynn -- which Giuliani apparently confirmed last month to ABC News.

"What are we to make of that?" Scarborough said, laughing. "Is Rudy Giuliani making it up as he goes along? Is he purposefully lying? Does he have early onset of dementia?"

Giuliani previously admitted that Trump asked Comey about the Flynn investigation, and conceded the former FBI director took those questions as a direction to ease up on the former national security advisor, although he denied saying that during the Sunday interview.

"How does he go from yesterday saying he never asked that question to us, of course, having a tape where clearly a couple weeks ago he said that's precisely what the president said?" Scarborough said.

MSNBC analyst John Heilemann said Giulian's lies had become so "insane" that he couldn't even keep track of them, and Scarborough agreed the president's lawyer had destroyed whatever credibility he once possessed.

"We can go through Jim Comey's contemporaneous notes and his friends' contemporaneous notes, or you can just take Rudy Giuliani's word for it because Giuliani himself said the president was saying give Flynn a break," Scarborough said. "You can say this is the death of truth. I just think this is just the renaissance of just stupid -- out-and-out stupid."

"Seriously, a third-grader -- and I've had four third-graders -- a third-grader would be able to keep his or her story more consistent than what Rudy Giuliani is doing on the Sunday shows every morning," he added.
