No president has begun a White House term polling as “poorly” with the American public as Donald Trump did this year, according to MSNBC's Rachel Maddow, who forecasted that the president’s approval rating will only drop lower when the full scope of his political agenda is reached.
The host opened her show Thursday with a detailed dissection of Trump’s poll numbers, which she told viewers “flipped” to reveal a deeper disapproval rate this week when compared to his first week in office.
“All presidents are above water at this point in their presidencies, right out of the gate," Maddow said in her opening monologue. "Trump's the only one. Trump was underwater with the American public from day one, and since then, he's been sinking like a cinder block in an ocean trench. I did not know to expect that.”
The sinking poll numbers are a stinging omen of things to come for Trump and his administration, Maddow warned.
“All of this is absolutely, historically unprecedented,” she said. “No president has ever come out of the gate with numbers like this ever before – and it is across the board.”

But, Maddow added, since Inauguration Day, “everything he has done has made the public dislike him even more strongly.”
She went on to list a number of Trump’s early executive actions and policy positions he has taken – including his decision to pardon Jan. 6 attackers, the mass firing of federal employees, and his “genius idea for Gaza” – as examples.
“The stuff he's doing is catastrophically unpopular,” Maddow said. “And the things he crows the loudest about are the things the American public likes the least.”
She concluded by telling viewers that Trump and his allies are “trying to go as far as they can and as fast as they can” to ram through radical change “to abolish the constitutional republic and impose a new form of government.”
“That is what I think is going on,” Maddow said.
