Moody’s Ratings Service downgraded the United States’ credit rating on Friday, citing rising government debt and increased interest payments, according to media reports.
The ratings agency lowered the U.S. from Aaa to Aa1 – the first time Moody’s has issued such a downgrade in modern history. The rare and sobering distinction was quickly noticed by political observers across social media, who quickly hurled blame at President Donald Trump.
“Moody’s just downgraded America’s credit rating based on debt and political risk,” former presidential candidate Andrew Yang wrote on X. “Our political dysfunction is now officially encroaching on our creditworthiness - and our standard of living.”
“JUST IN: Moody’s downgrades U.S. credit rating to Aa1 from Aaa,” Republicans against Trump posted to their X account. “Great job, Donald.”

Democratic strategist Chris D. Jackson called it “a stunning move.”
“Moody’s has downgraded the U.S. credit rating from Aaa to Aa1—for the first time in history," he posted on X. "That’s right: the only major credit agency that hadn’t downgraded us under Trump just did. Who else [is] enjoying all this ‘economic winning’ under Trump?”
“[waits for weird and unhinged rant from Trump about Moody's being antifa],” writer Parker Molloy quipped to her Bluesky followers.”
Bloomberg opinion columnist Conor Sen posted his own take on Bluesky: “Woke Moody’s.”
