Bulwark publisher Sarah Longwell sounded the alarm Thursday as she warned that President Donald Trump is losing steam among his own voters amid growing economic worries – particularly over grocery prices.
Appearing on MSNBC, Longwell, who also hosts The Focus Group Podcast, told host Nicolle Wallace that voters in weekly focus groups – many of them Trump voters – are increasingly frustrated with the cost of living and are blaming Trump’s economic agenda, especially his sweeping set of tariffs.
“Donald Trump had one job,” Longwell said Thursday. “His one job was to come in and lower prices, and here's the thing that he did when he was campaigning: he lied to people and he said, ‘I'm going to lower grocery prices on day one.’”

That unkept promise, according to Longwell, is giving his supporters “a ton of anxiety,” as they put off major purchases. It’s an issue – unlike his criminal cases – that Trump “can’t spin,” she argued.
“Donald Trump can't bluster his way, or sort of beast mode his way, through that issue,” Longwell said.
“His voters shop at Walmart,” she added. “They will notice the price increases.” Longwell’s criticism over the MAGA leader continued when she said the grocery issue was an area where Trump’s opponents “now have the ability to say, ‘Hey, he’s failing you.”
“He’s getting owned by China right now,” Longwell concluded.
