President Donald Trump may be losing his grip on power following Tuesday’s devastating Republican election losses, with an even greater threat emerging from inside his own White House, according to a conservative political analyst.
In a blistering Friday column for The Bulwark titled “Trumpfall,” editor Jonathan V. Last suggested the president’s fighting spirit may have finally collapsed — just as Vice President JD Vance and other Republican power players position themselves to take control.
“We may have broken his back, once and for all,” Last wrote.
He pointed to Trump’s unusually subdued behavior after the GOP’s crushing midterm defeat, including his Wednesday appearance touring construction of his White House ballroom.
“This is the quietest Trump has been since he was hospitalized with COVID,” Last observed.
But he argued the president’s biggest problem may no longer be Democrats.
“This time his most dangerous enemy is the guy he brought into the White House with him," he wrote Friday.
“Trump doesn’t have to fight Democrats. He has to fight Vance, the conservative establishment, and his own family—all of whom are trying to put him in a home," the conservative writer added.
Last questioned whether Trump still possesses the energy to fend off what he described as an internal power struggle.
“The White House has become a lavish assisted-living facility designed to perpetuate Trump’s delusions and keep him comfortable,” he wrote.
Last concluded by wondering out loud whether Trump still had “the energy, ruthlessness, and vigor” to fight back against those seeking to sideline him.
“Is Trump’s spirit broken?” Last asked, suggesting the MAGA leader could become “more managed than manager” as his allies maneuver for control.
“Trump suddenly looks like a spent force,” he concluded.
