'New level of DEFCON:’ CNN host laughs off Trump’s ‘thinly veiled’ Musk post

CNN host Erin Burnett couldn’t help but laugh during a segment on her show Wednesday night as she unpacked what she called a “thinly veiled” post from President Donald Trump aimed at Elon Musk.

“Trump is not happy,” Burnett said as she told viewers that Musk unloaded 47 posts in 30 hours, “and each one is a new level of DEFCON. I mean, there is no ambiguity.”

The remarks came during a discussion of the increasing rift between Trump and Musk, as the tech billionaire continues to lash out over social media over the president’s “big, beautiful bill,” which Musk this week referred to as a “disgusting abomination.”

Burnett pointed out that Trump has remained publicly silent over the growing feud with his top MAGA ally, “except for one thing,” she noted. The CNN host zeroed in on a post that appeared on Trump’s Truth Social feed Wednesday afternoon, where the president posted a screenshot of a week-old comment from Musk thanking Trump “for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending.”

“It seems to be thinly veiled,” she said as she laughed through the post. “But I mean, this bill is Trump's entire domestic agenda,” she added.

“This is very embarrassing,” former Rep. Max Rose (D-NY) said of the MAGA quarrel. “Not just for Trump, but for the entire Republican leadership.”
