LIVE: 18 children, 3 adults and suspect killed at Texas elementary school shooting
Following a shooting Tuesday at an Uvalde elementary school in Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott said that 14 students and a teacher had been killed.
CNN is now reporting Texas state Sen. Roland Gutierrez says he was briefed by Texas Rangers and the death toll has rised to 18 children and three adults.
"He shot and killed horrifically and incomprehensibly 14 students and killed a teacher," Abbott said during a press briefing.
The shooting occurred at Robb Elementary School, which is about 85 miles west of San Antonio. The school has an enrollment of just under 600 students and includes 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades.
The suspect is an 18-year-old who is believed to have been killed by officers. Abbott said he was armed with "a handgun, and he may have also had a rifle."
The suspect also reportedly shot his grandmother. Her condition is unclear.
“Texans across the state are grieving for the victims of this senseless crime and for the community of Uvalde," Abbott said in a statement. "We thank the courageous first responders who worked to finally secure Robb Elementary School. I have instructed the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Rangers to work with local law enforcement to fully investigate this crime. The Texas Division of Emergency Management is charged with providing local officials all resources necessary to respond to this tragedy as the State of Texas works to ensure the community has what it needs to heal.”
