Witness describes filming McKinney cop attack: 'I thought he was going to shoot that kid'

The 15-year-old McKinney, Texas boy who witnessed and recorded a police officer's confrontation with a group of teenagers of color criticized the officer's actions while arguing that he was spared from physical abuse because he is white.

Brandon Brooks told WDAF-TV that he felt Cpl. Eric Casebolt thought 15-year-old Dajerria Becton was "running her mouth" when he threw her to the ground before putting his knee on her back.

Brooks' footage of the incident late last week quickly spread online, becoming the latest example of what police critics describe as a pattern of unreasonable force. The video also shows Casebolt drawing his gun against two teen boys who approach him after he takes Becton down, before being restrained by other officers.

"When he pulled his gun my heart dropped," Brooks said. "As soon as he pulled out his gun, I thought he was going to shoot that kid. That was very scary."

The footage was taken during a party held at a local pool. Some residents have argued that attendees were being unruly, prompting them to call police for assistance. But according to Brooks, residents wrongfully pushed to escalate authorities' response.

"Most of the kids weren't even involved," he said. "It was a fight between a mom and girl, which had nothing to do with all the other kids that she apparently needed more cops for."

Casebolt then arrived and started "going crazy" after tripping and dropping his flashlight, Brooks said.

"I was one of the only white people in the area when that was happening," he explained. "You can see in part of the video where he tells us to sit down, and he kinda like skips over me and tells all my African-American friends to go sit down."

Casebolt was placed on administrative leave following the incident. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People American Civil Liberties Union, and some local groups have called for him to be fired.
