Brian Laundrie, the man wanted for questioning in the killing of Gabby Petito, reportedly died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, the attorney for his family told CNN on Tuesday.

"Chris and Roberta Laundrie have been informed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and the manner of death was suicide," said Steven Bertolino.

Authorities believe Petito was killed by manual strangulation.

CNN correspondent Jean Casarez wondered where Laundrie obtained the firearm.

"Did the family know he had a gun?" she wondered. "Where did he get that gun?"

"A gun was never part of this equation," she noted.
