Mississippi Democratic Senate nominee Scott Colom is accusing Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) of taking credit for a Gulf Coast rail line she voted against.
“She’s back at it again. But she got caught,” Colom wrote in a fundraising email sent Thursday. “Cindy Hyde-Smith is running her mouth and taking credit for things she can’t claim.”
Colom pointed to posts in which Hyde-Smith touted the Amtrak Mardi Gras line, which runs along the Gulf Coast between New Orleans and Mobile, Alabama, and celebrated its one-year anniversary.
“The problem? SHE VOTED AGAINST THE BILL THAT MADE THE PROJECT POSSIBLE!” Colom wrote.
Hyde-Smith voted against the 2021 bipartisan infrastructure law, which she called a “$1.2 trillion Trojan horse” spending plan. The law poured billions of dollars into passenger rail.
Colom’s email also cited former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who he said “came to Mississippi and called Cindy Hyde-Smith out.”
“Forgetting your keys? I’ve been there. Forgetting what you had for lunch? Everybody understands that happens,” Colom wrote. “But forgetting you voted AGAINST bringing a project to Mississippi and trying to take credit for it? That’s just plain wrong.”
Colom, a district attorney in northeast Mississippi, is trying to unseat Hyde-Smith in a race that has drawn national attention in its final week. President Donald Trump rallied for Hyde-Smith in Corinth on Monday, and Colom has claimed polls show a statistical tie.
