Trump promises America law and order -- but he is a dire threat to both

Donald Trump is not a normal American presidential nominee, and there has been very little normal about the Republican convention that has now officially confirmed his nomination.

A historian takes us back to the 1930s and 1940s to show why calls for unity are not enough

The U.S. is in the midst of a tepid economic recovery following a catastrophic downturn, but millions of Americans continue to feel left behind. Some turn their anger on corporations and Wall Street. Others target nonwhite immigrant workers. A charismatic media personality with a populist message attacks religious minorities. Conservatives denounce the president and his allies for flouting the Constitution and steering the United States toward socialism. Meanwhile, many on the left warn that fascism is taking root in America.

The RNC summarized: Attacks without solutions and crankiness without hope

Oh dear. Watching C-SPAN and waiting for Tuesday’s roll call confirming Donald Trump’s nomination to begin, the house band there in the hall, led by GE Smith, formerly of Saturday Night Live, played covers of The Temptations’ “I Can’t Get Next To You” and other golden oldies. Many rhythm-impaired white people were dancing in the aisles and stands, a lot of them badly. And they kept doing it every time there was a lull in the action and the music started up again, like a high school 50th reunion run amok.

Why attacking a police officer should not be a hate crime

A new Louisiana law will make attacking a police officer a federal hate crime, the first of its kind. Can Democrats neutralize the excitement of Trump the Entertainer?

Democrats usually can be accused of bringing a knife to a gunfight. They did it when the Supreme Court overruled the popular vote in 2000 and shoved George W. Bush into the White House. They did it legislatively on numerous occasions when Republicans outmaneuvered them on everything from a Keynesian recovery package after the recession to gun control to funds to combat the Zika virus. They did it when they sidelined President Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court. You have to hand it to Republicans: They never use a pistol when they have a howitzer at their disposal.

The GOP convention shows Republican rhetoric about guns is utter bullsh*t

If the only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun—or better yet, lots of good guys with guns—then it goes without saying that the contentious GOP convention should be prickling with weapons: rock hard glocks, pen-sized pistols, and a whole array of AKs strapped across the backs of brave men who are ready to spray anything that moves with a shower of lead.
