Here is how to fight back against the cult of Trump

If you still think this is just a fight between left and right, you’re not keeping up. It hasn’t been for a long time if it ever was. It’s patriotic Americans defending the country against a cult that has gotten way out of hand in large part because we treated it as just another battle between left and right.

Trump may finally face a reckoning for defying the Constitution

Welcome to another edition of What Fresh Hell?, Raw Story’s roundup of news items that might have become controversies under another regime, but got buried – or were at least under-appreciated – due to the daily firehose of political pratfalls, unhinged tweet storms and other sundry embarrassments coming out of the current White House.

Animal House at 40: Why the 'national lampoon' of white male tribalism lashing out remains relevant in the Trump era

When "Animal House" was released 40 years ago on July 28, 1978, the low-budget, guerilla-style tale of campus anarchy struck a nerve with audiences, becoming the highest-grossing comedy in Hollywood history and exerting a powerful influence on the culture. While it is remembered mostly for its comedy, "Animal House" is also a political satire in the tradition of Mark Twain, Kurt Vonnegut and "The Simpsons," and its raucous, episodic narrative pokes a finger in the eye of America’s self-image.

Donald Trump is just a sign of the much deeper failings of the United States

There was a period in my later life when I used to say that, from the age of 20 to my late sixties, I was always 40 years old; I was, that is, an old young man and a young old one. Tell that to my legs now. Of course, there’s nothing faintly strange in such a development. It’s the most ordinary experience in life: to face your own failing self, those muscles that no longer work the way they used to, those brain cells jumping ship with abandon and taking with them so many memories, so much knowledge you’d rather keep aboard. If you’re of a certain age -- I just turned 74 -- you know exactly what I mean.

Here are 4 far-right evangelical extremists who have made absurd statements during the Trump era

Right-wing evangelist Franklin Graham, son of the late Rev. Billy Graham, became the butt of jokes this week for warning, on July 25, that anyone who criticizes President Trump for allegedly cheating on his wives and paying hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels and Playboy model Karen McDougal risks facing the wrath of God. Graham even quoted scripture to explain why the media and fellow Christians needed to leave Trump alone. But in the Trump era, Graham is hardly the only right-wing Christian fundamentalist who has been making ridiculous statements. With Trump in office, the Christian Right is feeling empowered—and with that empowerment has come other comments that are as laughable as Graham’s.

Here is why Trump's crassness matters more than you think

In an earlier essay I identified crassness as President Trump’s chief characteristic. Now, after his mid-July trip to Europe and press accusations that he acted crassly toward German Chancellor Angela Merkel and British Prime Minister Theresa May, we need to consider why this crass behavior is important.

Trump left reeling after finally facing resistance from Republicans

Donald Trump’s antics in Helsinki have set off a confluence of conservative resistance — often led by some of the Republicans most reticent to criticize the president in the past — that finds him in an unfamiliar state: virtually all alone in his attempt to frame his obvious retreat as a victory.
