Donald Trump and Ayn Rand

Friends,

Thanks for joining me again as we explore the common good — what it is, where it went, how it can be revived and strengthened.

The idea of “the common good” was once widely understood and accepted in America. After all, the U.S. Constitution was designed for “We the people” seeking to “promote the general welfare” — not for “me the selfish jerk seeking as much wealth and power as possible.”

Is the Michigan school shooter 'broken' beyond repair?

It was hard to watch the sentencing hearing for Oxford high school shooter Ethan Crumbley as it unfolded last week, and not only because of how tragic it continues to be for the community. It’s not often we witness a teen up for life without the possibility of parole. A mom to young boys, I had the fleeting but grim thought: What if this was my kid? As the camera zoomed in on the gunman’s face, his youth and nervousness more apparent than in photos, it was clear that he is still very much a child. And a lost one at that. The fact that the gunman's parents have also been charged in the shooting...

Outraged Kayleigh McEnany declares: ‘You’re saying it’s not a big deal that the president of United States lies’

Fox News host and former Trump White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany spun an unproven attack against President Joe Biden on Thursday, culminating in her outrage that her co-host, she claimed, is saying, "it's not a big deal that the President of the United States lies" – despite having no proof that he has lied.

Republicans from House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to Oversight Chairman Jim Comer to Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan and countless others for most of the year have been making baseless and unsubstantiated claims about President Biden and what they, without any proof, are calling the "Biden Crime Family."

How trolling became the core identity of the post-Trump GOP

So, Donald Trump says that if Judge Tanya Chutkan orders him not to reveal details of the prosecution’s case before they can be presented to a jury, including the names, addresses, and testimony of witnesses against him, he’s going to do it anyway and challenge the court.

And there’s little reason to believe he won’t do it: he’ll take what he’s asserting as his First Amendment right to troll and threaten witnesses against him all the way to the Supreme Court he packed with three rightwing crackpots. If nothing else, it may buy him enough time to get elected president and pardon himself before he’s convicted.

In this, Trump has raised vicious social media trolling into a form of electoral performance art. He’s become our troll-in-chief.

Florida Keys couple’s arrest encouraging proof FBI still hunting down Jan. 6 rioters

Former President Donald Trump, a Palm Beach resident, is not the only South Florida resident indicted recently for playing a role in the deadly Jan. 6 Capitol riots 19 months ago. This week, a Florida Keys couple became the latest to be arrested for taking part in the mayhem that ensued under the direction of Trump, a failed coup attempt by his followers. Tuesday, Bryan Roger Bishop, 51, and his wife, Tonya, 47, were arraigned in federal court in Key West, accused of being part of that violent mob. The FBI found its most recent suspects on their liveaboard vessel in Marathon. Pretty remote, bu...

Dolly Parton does fine work for childhood literacy, but she can’t do it all herself

On Aug. 14, Dolly Parton will be in Kansas to celebrate the statewide success of her Imagination Library program. Dolly’s Imagination Library is an example of how music, art, and culture can intersect with social change. Through her deep commitment to education and literacy, Dolly has shown that celebrities can be powerful catalysts for positive transformation. Founded in 1995 by Dolly Parton herself, the Imagination Library is a unique book-gifting program that provides free books to children from birth to 5 years old with the mission of fostering a lifelong passion for reading. The program r...

A Newsom-DeSantis debate wouldn’t be a sideshow. It could be something much bigger

The debate between California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is on. Fox News’ Sean Hannity gave the Florida presidential candidate an offer on live television he literally could not refuse: a stage with Newsom. “Gavin made the offer, your answer is . . .” asked Hannity on his show. There was brief silence and a frozen smile from DeSantis. “Absolutely, I’m game,” he said. “Tell me when and where. We’ll do it.” It was destiny. And it also happens to be the right thing to do. If American politics were a high school, the senior class is either stumbling at speeches, freezing in mi...

What happened in Ohio Tuesday? Voters refused to be suckered — and stood up for themselves

Ohioans, I’m so proud of you. You stood up for yourselves. You refused to let corrupt politicians and lobbyists steal your power. You paid homage to generations before us who won us these rights, and you protected them for future generations. You won a noble and historic victory for democracy in Ohio, and you should be very proud.

The reality remains that Ohio Republicans — the very same people who tried to do this to you — still control our executive, legislative, and judicial branches. In a normal political epoch, they would learn a lesson from all of this. But we are not in a normal political epoch, so my best advice is to expect them to have learned nothing. If their flailing on Wednesday is any indication, that advice appears to be sound.

They claim you were confused. They claim they didn’t have enough time to plan a campaign for an issue that they forced Ohioans to consider, where they picked the election date and timeline. They claim that Ohio voters protecting the Ohio Constitution from their attempts to rig it against voters, is just more evidence that the Ohio Constitution is too vulnerable to manipulation.

How to de-program Fox News watchers on the Trump Indictment

Dear Trump-loving Friend,
Donald Trump and the fascist-supporting, billionaire-funded rightwing have been lying to you about these indictments, particularly the federal one that charges Trump with trying to overturn the 2020 election in defiance of the Constitution and federal law.

His lawyer has been all over TV telling anybody who will listen that Joe Biden ordered this prosecution and that it’s all about “denying Trump’s free speech right to question an election.”

Both are lies, being spun to try to justify a criminal conspiracy of shocking proportions that nearly ended the American Experiment after 247 years.

A Trump-RFK Jr. ticket is the ultimate MAGA Trojan horse — and it’s being built in New Hampshire

CONCORD, N.H. — Robert F. Kennedy Jr. claimed his presidential candidate status in New Hampshire by filing a declaration of candidacy and paying a $1,000 filing fee; that's all it takes in the Granite State — sign your name and put up some chump change.

Identifying as a Democrat and purchasing real estate on the presidential primary ballot gives insight into the RFK Jr. campaign strategy: run as a Democrat while serving as the MAGA Trojan Horse.

The point of Chris Christie’s campaign

If you think the point of Chris Christie’s presidential bid is winning the presidency, I think you may be misunderstanding it. Yes, I know what he says. He says he’s an alternative to Donald Trump. But he also touched on something larger during an interview with “CBS News Sunday Morning.”

Reporter Bob Costa asked what he’s going to say to Trump during the first GOP debate later this month. The former New Jersey governor said: “I can guarantee I’m going to tell the truth for 90 minutes, because the truth matters, and I think Republican voters need to hear the truth” (my italics).

Don’t use Florida’s children as pawns in political games

This is what we believe to be true about Florida parents: They don’t want the government indoctrinating their kids, or usurping their own decisions when it comes to belief systems, sexuality, faith or politics. That’s true of Republicans. Of Democrats. Of those who have rejected partisan labels, and those who don’t care about politics at all. Politicians understand that as well. That’s why they often pitch their most egregious efforts to interject themselves into those family conversations as responses to attacks on parental freedom from “the other side.” Liberals and conservatives alike have ...

History must record Trump's plan for a nationwide 'Kent State' massacre

Although it’s generally only mentioned in passing in the mainstream media, there are two particularly chilling passages in Jack Smith’s indictment of Trump.

Both, to my mind, invoke Kent State, but on a much larger scale.

With that crime, you’ll recall, on May 1, 1970, Ronald Reagan called students protesting the Vietnam war across America “brats,” “freaks” and “cowardly fascists,” adding, as The New York Times noted at the time:
