President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday an unsubstantiated report that alleged Russia had gathered compromising material on U.S. President-elect Donald Trump was a hoax.
Putin, who reiterated he had never met Trump, said he hoped that Moscow and Washington could eventually get their troubled relations back to normal.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Monday it was inappropriate for President-elect Donald Trump to weigh directly into the politics of another country by branding German Chancellor Angela Merkel's 2015 decision on refugees "a catastrophic mistake."
"I thought frankly it was inappropriate for a president elect of the United States to be stepping into the politics of other countries in a quite direct manner,", and he will have to speak to that," Kerry told CNN's Christiane Amanpour.
"He will have to speak to that, as of Friday he is responsible for that relationship."

Rep. Chris Collins (R-NY), a member of the Trump transition team, on Monday accused Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) of acting like a "spoiled child" after the civil rights icon suggested that Russia's interference in the U.S. election undermined the legitimacy of Donald Trump's presidency.
During a Martin Luther King Jr. Day discussion on Fox Business, network contributor Dagen McDowell took issue with Trump's Twitter tirade which accused Lewis of not taking enough action to help his constituents.
"That's is who Donald Trump is," she acknowledged. "But at some point, at times, I do wish he wouldn't punch down."
"My opinion is, what John Lewis is doing, he's pouting," Collins opined. "He lost. It's like a spoiled child and we've seen it with the others. They can't get over the fact that they lost. And what do spoiled little kids do. You know, they run around and throw a tantrum."
"That's what we're seeing," he continued. "They are pouting. And frankly, it's somewhat enjoyable to watch because it shows you again how upset they are, when they were so smug when they left Congress knowing that Hillary Clinton was going to win."
"We should all actually just kind of grin a little bit and understand that this is how hard this election hit them when Hillary lost."

Millennials, some so young they need their parents' permission and others with babies in tow, will join women's protests this weekend as their generation for the first time faces challenges to rights they have known most of their lives.
Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend the Women's March on Washington and sister marches in other cities around the world on Saturday, the day after Donald Trump is sworn into office as U.S. president.
The display of unity is a show of opposition to Trump's potential impact on women's rights, particularly abortion access, health insurance, child care and workplace policies that could take a heavy toll on young women, activists say.
"Everything that can affect the population in general is going to affect millennial women," said Jamie Kenney, 34, a New Jersey writer and mother of two young children.
"Because we are young and because our careers aren't established and because most of us have uteruses, it's going to hit us in ways that it hits everybody and in ways that are going to be unique and harder to overcome," said Kenney, who planned to attend a women's march in New York City.
Along with the main march in Washington, more than 270 others are planned in the United States and in 33 other nations, with more than 500,000 people expected to join, organizers say.
The marches call for reproductive rights such as access to abortion and contraception, equal pay, affordable childcare, an end to violence against women and rights for gay, lesbian, bisexuals and transgender (LGBT) people.
'TURNING POINT'
Trump has come under fire for his attitudes toward women that emerged as he campaigned for the presidency. In a 2005 tape that came to light during the campaign he brags about groping women and making unwanted sexual advances.
He says he opposes abortion and has vowed to pull government funding from Planned Parenthood, a major provider of women's health care. He wants to repeal the Affordable Care Act, a national insurance program that pays for most birth control methods for women.
"Millennial women have taken all of those things for granted," said Elisabeth Kelan, a professor at Britain's Cranfield School of Management and author of a book on millennials entitled "Rising Stars."
"It's a real turning point for this generation," she said.
Most millennials, 73 percent, have an unfavorable view of Trump, according to the Pew Research Center.
Typically defined as those born between the early 1980s and early 2000s, they number around 74.5 million in the United States, according to Pew.
The Trump presidency will have a lasting effect because people form political identities in early adulthood, said Benjamin Knoll, an associate professor of politics at Centre College in Kentucky who specializes in public opinion and voting patterns.
"For the younger ones now in college and their mid-20s, they're going to come of age at a time when we have Donald Trump as president," he said.
A millennial himself at 34, Knoll said he would attend a local women's march with his 8-year-old daughter.
Alessandra Rizzo, 16, plans to ride the bus to the Washington march after her father agreed she could go with a friend, accompanied by her friend's mother.
"I can't vote," Rizzo said. "So the march is just a way for me to express my dislike of what's going on."
Trump's scepticism about climate change and his intention to make abortion illegal are most troubling, she said.
"I'll be at the age of having to worry about this when he's the president, and that's just very scary to me," she said.

Europe's destiny lies in its own hands, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Monday in response to comments from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who said in a newspaper interview he believed other countries would leave the EU after Britain.
"I think we Europeans have our fate in our own hands," Merkel told a joint news conference with New Zealand's prime minister.
Asked about Trump's criticism of her migrant policy, Merkel said: "I am personally waiting for the inauguration of the U.S. president. Then of course we will work with him on all levels."

Incoming White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer used a Martin Luther King Jr. Day appearance on Fox News to lecture Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) on how to fight for civil rights.
After days of fuming from the president-elect and his staff over Lewis' suggestion that the 2016 election was not "legitimate," Fox News host Ainsley Earhardt asked Spicer if Trump would be willing to take the high road.
"Is there something he can do to say, 'Congressman Lewis, come in my office, let's fix this,'" Earhardt wondered.
Spicer pointed out that Trump already has plans to meet with Martin Luther King III "to talk about the legacy of Dr. King, ways that we can continue to enfranchise people and advocate for more people to be part of the voting process and further the legacy that Dr. King fought so hard for."
"I think what's disappointing is someone like John Lewis, who is such an icon of voting rights and civil rights, to make a comment about the legitimacy of an election, something that he's fought so hard to create the integrity of, to talk about delegitimizing an election," the Trump aide said.
Spicer added that Trump would be willing to meet Lewis "to further the goal of uniting this country and moving forward."
"But make no mistake," he warned. "If someone is going to attack the president-elect, whether he's going to attack him or this country or American workers, Donald Trump is leaving a successful business to fight for this country to fight for American workers. And he's not going to sit back and let people take pot shots."

Donald Trump told the Washington Post that under his healthcare plan, "We're going to have insurance for everybody," but declined to reveal details of how that will be accomplished.
Robert Costa reported that in a Saturday night interview, the president-elect said that he will unveil his plan soon with the help of Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Speaker of the House Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI).
“The Congress can’t get cold feet because the people will not let that happen,” Trump said.
Promising "lower numbers, lower deductible," Trump was shy with the details about how he plans to widen coverage but lower costs simultaneously.
“It’s very much formulated down to the final strokes. We haven’t put it in quite yet but we’re going to be doing it soon,” he said. He indicated that he is waiting for his nominee for secretary of health and human services Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) to be confirmed.
Congressional Republicans voted last week to overturn Pres. Barack Obama's signature legislation the Affordable Care Act (ACA) -- also known as "Obamacare" -- in spite of the fact that they have no immediate replacement plan to account for the millions of Americans who will lose their health coverage.
Trump says there's nothing to worry about.
“I think we will get approval. I won’t tell you how, but we will get approval," he assured Costa.
People who rely on the ACA for health coverage, Trump said, "can expect to have great health care. It will be in a much simplified form. Much less expensive and much better.”
“It’s not going to be their [ACA] plan,” he said. “It’ll be another plan. But they’ll be beautifully covered. I don’t want single-payer. What I do want is to be able to take care of people.”
Trump also said that he does not intend to cut Medicare, which was echoed by Reince Priebus -- the new administration's chief of staff -- on Sunday.
When Costa pressed Trump about potential turbulence and instability in financial markets that could result from his policies, the incoming president was sanguine.
“Stock drops and America goes up,” he said. “I don’t care. I want to do it right or not at all.”
Pres. Barack Obama took a dig at President-elect Donald Trump during his final interview as president, saying the job of U.S. president is complex and demanding, requiring "thick skin" and "stamina."
TheHill.com reported Sunday evening that during his sit-down with CBS' 60 Minutes, Obama recommended that the nation's first executive be physically strong enough to face the rigors of the job and that he or she must not get distracted by critics in government and the media.
"Thick skin helps," he said to Steve Kroft, as well as "stamina."
"There is a greater physical element to this job than you would think, just being able to grind it out," Obama explained. "And I think your ability to -- not just mentally and emotionally but physically -- be able to say, ‘We got this. We're going to be okay.’”
Donald Trump is known among former associates for his short attention span. The Art of the Deal ghostwriter Tony Schwartz said that Trump is "a living black hole" with the attention span of a "kindergartner."
"It’s impossible to keep him focused on any topic, other than his own self-aggrandizement, for more than a few minutes," Schwarz said in 2016. “If he had to be briefed on a crisis in the Situation Room, it’s impossible to imagine him paying attention over a long period of time.”
Pres. Obama also told 60 Minutes that he does not believe that the presidency changed his moral outlook or core beliefs.
“One of the things I'm proud about is that I think my basic character and outlook actually have not changed much," the president said. "And people who are closest to me will tell you that -- the guy who came here is the same guy who's leaving.”

Republican President-elect Donald Trump lashed out at Saturday Night Live on Sunday, calling it "the worst of NBC".
Trump was apparently stung by Alec Baldwin's latest impression of Trump doing a press conference in which he refused to discuss "Russian pee pee parties" -- an allusion to a controversial dossier released last week that claimed the Russian government is holding explosive kompromat (compromising materials) on the former reality TV star.
Entertainment Weekly said that on Sunday afternoon, Trump tweeted, "@NBCNews is bad but Saturday Night Live is the worst of NBC. Not funny, cast is terrible, always a complete hit job. Really bad television!"
This has become something of a routine for Trump, who can be counted on to spend at least part of each Saturday night or Sunday complaining on Twitter about how the long-running NBC sketch comedy show has treated him.
This Sunday, Twitter users wasted no time in going on the attack.
TV Guide editor Alex Zalben mocked Trump by pretending he was a reader submitting a show recap.
Two groups who normally have very little in common have vowed to protect President-elect Donald Trump during his inauguration.
ChristianToday.com reported Sunday that "hundreds of prayer warriors" are traveling to Washington, D.C. this week to form a "prayer shield" around the Republican president-elect and keep him from harm.
"Like angels from heaven, hundreds of 'prayer warriors' have descended on Washington D.C. to undertake a crucial mission: protect U.S. President-elect Donald Trump by building a 'prayer shield' around him ahead of his Jan. 20 inauguration," the website said.
"POTUS Shield" is a coalition of Christian activists headed by Pastor Eric Majette from Virginia Beach, Virginia.
"We're actually a prayer group. We pray for leaders across our nation — a group of pastors come together to pray for our nation and our leaders, particularly the new administration," Majette said.
Should such celestial interventions fail, however, Fox and Friends said Sunday morning that a group called "Bikers for Trump" are also traveling to the nation's capital to act as roaming peacekeepers.
The group's founder Chris Cox told Fox News, "We're a force to be dealt with, we're a political phenomenon," but insisted they're not a vigilante organization.
"In the event that we are needed, we certainly will form a wall of meat," said Cox.
"What does that mean, 'a wall of meat?'" the Fox and Friends hosts asked.
"We'll be shoulder-to-shoulder with our brothers and toe-to-toe with anyone that is going to break through any police barriers, that's going to be assaulting women, spitting on them, throwing things at them."
He went on to say, however, "We are anticipating a peaceful transition of power."
