Trump's 'last chance': Presidential historian says upcoming date could end campaign hopes

Trump's 'last chance': Presidential historian says upcoming date could end campaign hopes

Donald Trump has had fierce competition in the polls ever since Kamala Harris ascended to the top of the Democratic ticket, but a presidential historian said he might have one last chance to regain momentum.

New polling shows the vice president with a five-point lead over the ex-president with a little over six weeks until Election Day, and historian Douglas Brinkley told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" that Trump is running out of chances to turn things around.

"Donald Trump is a usurper of democracy, he is a wrecking ball," Brinkley said. "You've been talking, rightfully reminding people of Jan. 6 but the hellscape he has developed of dividing our country. We have a chance to unite, Kamala Harris is doing an incredible job, momentum's [going] her way, and I think it's just getting some more young people engaged, and North Carolina is the state – I know everybody is waiting on Pennsylvania — North Carolina is really interesting that Harris has a chance of winning there."...

Morning Joe and Mika demolish Trump apologists in devastating supercut video

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski hit back at Donald Trump apologists who downplayed his threats to democracy.

The "Morning Joe" hosts rolled an extended supercut of video clips showing Trump promising to be a dictator on Day One of his potential second presidency, as well as other authoritarian threats he's made in recent months, in response to columnists and talk show hosts whitewashing the Republican nominee's record.

"For those people that said, 'Oh, nothing happened in his first term,' yeah, Jan. 6 happened in his first term," Scarborough said. "The attempt to overthrow American democracy, to throw out a presidential election because he didn't like the outcome happened. All those things Mika said happened in the first term. There are people writing this weekend, oh, and on Bill Maher going, 'Oh, you know what? Nothing really happened in the first term, we got by it okay – we survived.'"...

'Absolutely insane': Morning Joe bashes conservatives over latest Kamala Harris attack

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough ripped into critics on Monday over claims that Kamala Harris hasn't revealed enough information about her policies.

The "Morning Joe" host bashed a pair of conservative columnists — Bret Stephens of the New York Times and Daniel Henninger of the Wall Street Journal — who have complained that Harris talks too much about her background and not enough about policy specifics.

"That's a lie, an absolute lie," Scarborough said. "It ignores what politicians have been doing for hundreds of years."...

'It sells': Trump-defending conservative admits one Harris moment 'will help her' win

CNN's Scott Jennings identified one particular moment in Kamala Harris' sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey that might move the needle with fellow conservatives.

Winfrey expressed surprise that the vice president had revealed she's a gun owner during the recent debate against Donald Trump, and Jennings had to admit that he liked hearing Harris say, "If somebody breaks into my house, they're getting shot."

"I think that specific clip we played, it's the only clip I've seen from Harris in this entire election that made me think, 'Oh, this is going to help her candidacy,'" Jennings said. "I watched a good chunk of this thing last night. I mean, it was mostly a solid hour of the same sort of vacuous word-salad tossing that we've come to expect out of the vice president."...

'What a denial!' Conservative buried for defending Trump's insults against Jewish voters

CNN's Scott Jennings was buried by his fellow panelists for defending Donald Trump for saying that “the Jewish people” would be partially to blame if he loses the election.

The former president told a gathering of Republicans at an event promoted as opposing antisemitism that any Jewish person who voted for Kamala Harris "should have their head examined" and falsely claimed the vice president had accepted the support of "Hamas sympathizers, antisemites, Israel haters on college campuses and everywhere else," and Jennings argued that was effective messaging.

"He's competing for the Jewish vote in a way that Republicans don't normally expect to compete," Jennings said. "Jewish Americans normally overwhelmingly vote Democratic and have for a very long time, and he's directly competing to get a better percentage."...

'Today's your lucky day': CNN conservative put on the spot over Mark Robinson scandal

CNN's Scott Jennings drew the unenviable assignment of providing a conservative defense of embattled North Carolina gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson, after reports emerged about shocking comments he made years ago on a smutty online forum.

The Donald Trump-endorsed Republican candidate flatly denied the comments, including an anecdote about spying on a women's locker room and stating "I'm a black NAZI," as well as extremely graphic comments about his sexual activities and pornographic preferences, and Jennings was put on the spot about how the latest controversy would affect the presidential race in the crucial swing state.

"Scott, it's your lucky day look," said host Kasie Hunt. "Look, it's unlikely that Mark Robinson would be in this position if it weren't for Donald Trump, who endorsed him. [Sen.] Thom Tillis backed a different candidate in the North Carolina primary and now you have a situation where this stuff has come out. Republicans are already basically writing off this race."...

‘People are going to jail’: Trump admin put on notice if DOJ secretly leaned on MAGA judge

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) suggested over the weekend that a Trump administration official may have quietly contacted a federal appeals judge to stall a contempt inquiry, and the legal analyst interviewing him declared that if so, “people are going to jail.”

In a clip flagged by political video aggregator Acyn Torabi from the Legal AF podcast, Whitehouse laid out a hypothetical involving D.C. Circuit Judge Neomi Rao, a Trump appointee.

“If some MAGA official communicated to Judge Rao or her chambers and that resulted in the administrative stay that held the door open and kept the facts from the Senate Judiciary Committee for his confirmation and stalled investigation into misconduct by the DOJ,” Whitehouse began, “ask any judge how big a deal that is.”...

'Devastating': Glee erupts as Susan Collins' 'road salt' boast blows up in her face

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) bragged about a road salt win at a Maine Senate debate, and her challenger's comeback had observers cheering.

On Tuesday, Collins faced Democratic challenger Troy Jackson in a debate weeks before the midterms. Asked what she would do about President Donald Trump's tariffs on Canada, Collins pointed to a specific victory.

"I was successful at getting road salt removed from the tariff list," Collins said. Jackson responded by pouncing on the answer....

Trump fact-checked to his face by guest during rally: 'I don't think so, Mr. President'

Former MLB superstar Roger Clemens fact-checked President Donald Trump during his Texas rally Wednesday night.

Trump traveled to San Antonio, Texas, to stump for Republicans like Tano Tijerina in his race against Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), whom Trump attacked for what he considered to be a "disloyal act" by not becoming a Republican after Trump pardoned him. At the rally, Trump invited Clemens on stage to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor, because Clemens had not yet been elected to the Hall of Fame.

In typical Trump fashion, the president also rattled off a fact about Clemens that the former big league pitcher was quick to correct. ...
