Tennessee Republicans' proposed congressional redistricting map has sparked outrage from Democratic lawmakers and political observers.
Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) condemned the plan as a "blatant, corrupt power grab" that would destroy Black community representation in Memphis, on a social media post.
The controversial map would connect Shelby County and Williamson County — 200 miles apart — into a single congressional district, and would pair Franklin, a Nashville suburb, with rural Lake County.
The redistricting would also prevent Democratic efforts to challenge Republican Rep. Andy Ogles by removing Nashville portions from his district and replacing them with rural West Tennessee counties.
Rep. John Ray Clemmons (D-TN) criticized the map as evidence of Republican fear over voter accountability, stating the redrawing reflects attempts to shield the party from consequences for "failed leadership, soaring prices and harmful policies."
