Hole blown in 'good guy with a gun' myth in new analysis

Fueled by right-wing politicians and the powerful gun lobby, nearly three-quarters of firearm owners in the United States believe the enduring myth that a gun at the ready will keep them safer—but a new analysis offers the latest hard evidence that guns simply make life more dangerous and deadly for everyone.

The Center for American Progress (CAP) joined gun violence research group GVPedia to release an issue brief debunking the falsehoods pushed by the National Rifle Association (NRA) and other pro-gun groups, which, looking to "counter the horrors of everyday gun violence in America,... masterfully constructed a narrative based on the myth of a 'good guy with a gun' using their weapon defensively to stop an armed assailant before harm can be done."

According to a report from NBC News, a January 6 rioter who had climbed up on scaffolding above the mob was filmed brandishing a handgun and appearing to be firing into the air.

The report notes that the shooter, identified as John Emanuel Banuelos, had previously told investigators he was present at the Capitol and boasted that he fired a weapon, telling them, "I’m the one in the video with the gun right here," before adding, "Man, should I just tell the FBI to come get me or what?”

A New Mexico man recently pleaded guilty to committing several drive-by shootings, saying he was allegedly paid to do so by a failed Republican candidate in a state legislative election.

According to the Department of Justice, 42-year-old Demetrio Trujillo recently pleaded guilty to five different federal charges including conspiracy, election interference and illegal use of a firearm in the wake of the 2022 election for New Mexico's 14th House District. Trujillo stated that failed Republican state legislative candidate Solomon Peña commissioned him to carry out multiple drive-by shootings at the homes of several Democrats in Albuquerque as a means of intimidating them in the aftermath of the election, which Peña claimed was "rigged" against him despite losing by roughly 50 points.

Highland Park fires rec director who’s suffering from mass shooting-induced PTSD

CHICAGO — A recreation director in Highland Park, Ill., who says he suffered psychological trauma following a mass shooting at the suburban city’s 2022 Fourth of July parade, has been fired, according to interviews and government records reviewed by Raw Story.

On Dec. 27, Highland Park officials terminated Chris Maliszewski, 41, who says he is actively being treated for depression, anxiety, insomnia and post-traumatic stress disorder stemming from the massacre, during which seven people died and at least 48 were injured. Maliszewski is in the midst of a workers’ compensation case initiated while he was on leave from his job through the Family and Medical Leave Act.
