Trump stepped in to pressure renegade Republicans to change speaker votes: report

President-elect Donald Trump worked in the background to stop the House GOP insurrection against House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), Punchbowl News' Jake Sherman reported on Friday.

Johnson, who is facing one of the narrowest House majorities in modern history and significant doubt from observers about his future, was saved in a surprise move as two House Republicans who had rejected him on the first vote abruptly switched to backing him, giving him just enough votes to be confirmed for the next Congress.

'No': Trump's latest demand gets curt shutdown from White House spokesperson

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre answered two pointed questions about incoming President Donald Trump's social media comments on Friday.

The first had to do with Trump's assertion on TruthSocial that "The Democrats are all 'giddy' about our magnificent American Flag potentially being at 'half mast' during my inauguration. They think it's so great and are so happy about it because, in actuality, they don't love our country, they only think about themselves.

Top Trump ally pumps brakes on 'Day One' MAGA policy plan

WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump indicated that he has major goals for his first day in office — but one of his top allies is pumping the brakes on one major agenda item.

Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) told Raw Story on Friday that he expects most of Trump's plans to quickly pass, including "delivering on border immediately, addressing the economy, tax policy, energy policy, and of course, yes, we're going to have to deal with the debt ceiling."

President-elect Donald Trump took to his Truth Social platform on Friday to complain that the American flag will be flown at half-staff for his inauguration due to the period of mourning for the recently deceased former President Jimmy Carter.

In the immediate aftermath of Carter's passing, Trump actually surprised some observers — and annoyed his own supporters — with a heartfelt tribute to the 100-year-old former president, who was controversial in his day but became beloved in his later years for his devotion to charitable causes around the world.

'Welp!' Mockery immediately hits Mike Johnson as he struggles to remain speaker

Speaker Mike Johnson's (R-LA) attempt to carry over his leadership to the 119th Congress struggled to pass its first vote Friday thanks to three Tea Party Republicans — in a move with strikingly similar parallels to Speaker Kevin McCarthy's (R-CA) battle for the position in 2023.

'Feelings are not facts': Experts complain views on economy now 'deeply partisan'

During 2024's U.S. presidential race, Donald Trump repeatedly claimed that the country's economy was in terrible shape and that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were to blame. But even though inflation has been a source of frustration for many Americans, the U.S. has enjoyed low unemployment rates during the Biden era.

On December 6, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported an unemployment rate of 4.2 percent.

'Warmonger': Trump flips out on Liz Cheney as Mike Johnson struggles for speaker votes

At the same time that it appeared House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) would fail to be re-elected on the first ballot on the floor of the House, Donald Trump jumped on Truth Social to rail at former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY).

Having remained silent most of the morning, the president-elect finally got around to complaining about President Joe Biden awarding Cheney the Presidential Citizens Medal for her service to the country.

On Truth Social, he raged, "Biden gave Liz Cheney a Medal yesterday, even though she has proven to be totally corrupt. She, 'Bennie' Thompson, and the rest of the Unselect Committee, destroyed and deleted all evidence from their crooked investigation of January 6th. Cheney has the distinction of losing her Congressional seat by the largest margin in History! The people of Wyoming understood how bad for our Country she was, but Biden rewarded her only because she hated 'TRUMP.'"

He then added, "She’s a Warmonger of low intelligence. All she wants to do is kill people in 'Endless Wars,' with no gain other than to defense companies. Liz Cheney, Cryin’ Adam Kinzinger, Bennie Thompson, and the rest of these dishonest Thugs have gotten away with horrible things under the pretense of January 6th. Nancy Pelosi refused to accept the help which was offered for security. She is responsible, and admitted as much, for all to see, on her daughter’s tape. They have destroyed the lives of many people, and are rewarded by getting Biden Fake Medals. This is not America. January 20th cannot come fast enough. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"
