'Framed!' Trump ally seeks pardon for drug kingpin president bribed by El Chapo
President Donald Trump's staunch ally Roger Stone is urging him to pardon a former Honduran president convicted of running a secret drug empire.
"SCANDAL: Biden & deep state put Latin American drug cartel kingpins on the US streets to frame & imprison pro-Trump Honduran Pres. Juan Orlando Hernandez and install a far-left socialist," wrote Stone on X. "@realDonaldTrump should remedy this injustice w/ a pardon. #FreeJOH"
Hernández was sentenced to 45 years in prison last year following a lengthy trial.
The former Honduran leader positioned himself as an ally of the United States in the fight to control drug cartels in Central America, and for years was beloved by Democrats and Republicans alike as someone who was controlling drug trafficking and the flow of migrants to the U.S. border.
However, a Wall Street Journal report documented the damning evidence prosecutors built that he was secretly turning Honduras into a "narco-state" that facilitated the very drug trafficking operations they claimed to be fighting.
"Notorious drug traffickers, including former Mexican cartel leader Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán, lined up to pay him millions of dollars in bribes to protect their shipments, prosecutors allege," said the report. "'For years he worked hand in hand with some of the largest and most violent drug traffickers in Honduras to send ton after ton of cocaine here to the United States,' Assistant U.S. Attorney David Robles told a jury."
The prosecution had a number of receipts for the jury, including "photos of Hernández posing with notorious drug dealers and an image of a machine gun inscribed with Hernández’s name and presidential title," noted the report.
Hernández maintained his innocence throughout the trial, with his lawyer telling the court, “Mr. Hernández does not sit down with drug dealers. He stands up to drug dealers.”
