U.S. freight company in chemical derailment pays out $600 million

The US freight company whose train derailed in Ohio last year, spilling large quantities of toxic chemicals, said Tuesday it has agreed to pay $600 million to settle lawsuits brought by the community over allegations of environmental damage and health problems.

Norfolk Southern Corporation "has reached a $600 million agreement in principle to resolve a consolidated class action lawsuit relating to the East Palestine derailment," the company said in a statement.
