Speeches show contrast 'could not be any sharper' between Biden and Trump: ex-prosecutor

Former U.S. prosecutor Joyce Vance says that the differences between Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and President Joe Biden could not be more stark following Biden’s speech Wednesday reiterating his reasons for stepping down from his campaign.

After President Joe Biden delivered his historic address to the nation on Wednesday, formally announcing he would bow out of the campaign for a second term and pass the torch to Vice President Kamala Harris, the panel of CNN commentators watching were in awe, with Van Jones in particular overcome with emotion.

"It feels almost unnatural for someone to have achieved the thing that they have been working toward their entire life and then say, the best thing is for me to step aside. Even knowing how hard that was for him, I think hearing those important themes come through, I think he was shining a light for the country moving forward over the next three and a half months through a really perilous election."

President Joe Biden delivered a historic speech from the Oval Office on Wednesday evening, formally communicating his plans to step down from seeking another term, giving his blessing to Vice President Kamala Harris — and urging Americans to unite and work to save their democracy.

"I'm surrounded by portraits of extraordinary American presidents," said Biden. "Thomas Jefferson wrote the immortal words that guide this nation. George Washington showed us presidents are not kings. Abraham Lincoln implored us to reject malice. Franklin Roosevelt, who inspired us to reject fear. I revere the office. I love my country more. It's been the honor of my life to serve as your president, but the defense of democracy, which is at stake, I think, is more important than a title."
