On the day before the anniversary of the Jan. 6 riot that sent lawmakers fleeing for their lives from supporters of ex-president Donald Trump, CNN's hosts took GOP lawmakers to task for diminishing the events of the day.

Retired admiral has a new mission: To keep Trump from returning to the White House

During his 30-year career in the U.S. Navy, Michael Smith says he stayed mostly detached from politics. Now the retired rear admiral has assumed a new post-military mission: working to keep Donald Trump from returning to the White House.

It’s not a matter of partisanship, he says.

“The election that’s in 2024 is clearly not a traditional election, where you are voting for the policies of one party against another,” Smith said at a press conference Thursday. “This election is different. This is against Donald Trump, who is an existential threat to everything I swore to defend.”

Ohio GOP lawmakers cutting winter recess short to override veto of anti-transgender bill

Ohio Republican state lawmakers are cutting their winter vacation short by several weeks, with some even canceling scheduled fundraisers, to return to the capital to try to override GOP Governor Mike DeWine's veto of an anti-transgender bill. The legislation would have placed a ban on gender-affirming care for transgender children and banned transgender school athletes from competing.

"Gov. DeWine refused to sign House Bill 68 into law and vetoed it on Friday morning," News5Cleveland reports. "The bill would have banned trans youth from accessing gender-affirming care like hormone blockers, and also some mental health services for conditions like gender dysphoria, which can be life-threatening distress due to a person’s sex assigned at birth not matching their gender identity. It also would have barred trans middle and high schoolers from participating in athletics with cisgender peers."

Progressives say 'absolutely no reason' Dems should help GOP eviscerate key programs

As a U.S. government shutdown yet again looms, a progressive coalition on Thursday warned Democrats against allowing federal spending cuts beyond what was agreed to in the debt ceiling deal that President Joe Biden negotiated with Republicans last year.

"Congressional Republicans aren't hiding the ball. They want to eviscerate funding for programs working families rely on and they are willing to shut down the government to do it," said Groundwork Collaborative executive director Lindsay Owens, a member of the ProsperUS coalition, in a statement.

South Florida sees bump in migrant landings. Is another seasonal surge coming?

Groups of desperate people fleeing Cuba have landed at least twice this week in the Florida Keys — the latest seasonal uptick of migrants willing to risk their lives in rickety vessels for a shot at freedom in the United States.

But, for now at least, arrivals in December and the first days of January are down dramatically from the previous holiday season when so many people poured in — often with several landings a day — that it overwhelmed local law enforcement agencies in the Florida Keys and forced both Gov. Ron DeSantis and President Joe Biden to send in emergency reinforcements.
