Senate's corporate Dems blamed as Texas governor approves 'rigged' voting maps

Bolstering criticism of the few U.S. Senate Democrats who continue to impede key party priorities—including voting rights protections—by refusing to reform or abolish the filibuster, Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Monday signed "extremely gerrymandered" political maps that could help the GOP retain control of the state for another decade.

"It is a monumentally bad idea to let politicians draw their own district maps."

Trump’s shocking ‘pressure campaign’ to get Pence to overturn the election

In their book "I Alone Can Fix It," Washington Post reporters Carol Leonnig and Philip Rucker take an in-depth look at former President Donald Trump's final year in office. Rucker has continued to report on the end of Trump's presidency in the Post, and during an appearance on MSNBC this week, he discussed Trump's efforts to pressure members of Congress Pence to overturn the election results in the days leading up to January 6.

Rucker told MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell and fellow guest Joyce White Vance (a former federal prosecutor), "There was a days-long effort at the command center at the Willard Hotel, which was just a block away from the White House — where folks like Steve Bannon, John Eastman, Bernie Kerik, the former New York police commissioner, were trying to create this pressure campaign on members of Congress to believe their allegations of voter fraud. There was not, of course, evidence to support those claims. Yet there they were at that hotel, reviewing these claims, trying to fan the flames of dissent."

'Chaos agent' Kyrsten Sinema slammed for threatening Biden’s 'entire agenda'

When now-Sen. Kyrsten Sinema was competing with Republican Martha McSally in Arizona's 2018 U.S. Senate race, she ran as a centrist — criticizing parts of then-President Donald Trump's MAGA agenda yet praising a famous Arizona conservative: the late Sen. John McCain. Sinema is still decidedly centrist in her views, and some of her critics argue that she is unnecessarily dogmatic in her centrism — especially when it comes to the Build Back Better Act of 2021. Such dogma is the target of a biting editorial published by New Jersey's NJ.com website on October 24.

In the piece, NJ.com's editorial board attacks Sinema for hurting Biden's economic plans, saying, "Kyrsten Sinema won her U.S. Senate seat largely by blaming an incumbent for supporting 'huge tax breaks for the wealthy and large corporations,' and vowing to help a Democratic majority roll back the Trump tax cuts, 83% of which benefit the top 1%. Yet now, she has rejected any tax hike on corporations or high earners to pay for President Biden's 'Build Back Better' package, and that alone could tank the entire agenda."

'A new low': Missouri paper slams Josh Hawley for 'cynical and dangerous' stunt that’s 'making the COVID crisis worse'

Far-right Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri never misses a chance to turn the COVID-19 pandemic into a culture war battle, and that includes President Joe Biden's vaccine/test mandate. The Kansas City Star's editorial board, in a scathing editorial published on October 21, lambasts Hawley for his objection to language used by the Biden Administration when offering guidance on pregnancy and COVID-19 vaccines.

Noting what Hawley told three Biden Administration officials in a recent letter, the editorial board explains, "The senator's political opportunism hits a new low…. when he objects to vaccine guidance involving women. It addresses COVID shots for 'people who are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to become pregnant now, or trying to become pregnant in the future'…. Incredibly, Hawley finds the phrases sinister. He prefers 'expecting' mother."

Trump called Willard Hotel 'war room' as allies plotted coup on 'eerie' night before Capitol riot: author

Donald Trump called into the "war room" set up at the Willard Hotel as some of his chief allies coordinated efforts to block the certification of Joe Biden's election win, according to a reporter who was present.

Washington Post reporter Robert Costa, co-author of the book "Peril" with his colleague Bob Woodward, was outside the hotel on Jan. 5 as Rudy Giuliani, Steve Bannon and others gathered inside ahead of the "Save America" rally, and only now does he recognize the significance of what happened at that time.

The newly elected Georgia Republican spoke briefly on camera after walking out of the White House in December, discussing efforts to object to the certification of Joe Biden's election win during a period which subsequent reporting has revealed Donald Trump and his allies were plotting to subvert that process.

'DEFCON 1 moment': Democrats call on Biden to take on Trump's Big Lie more forcefully

On Monday, the Tacoma News Tribune reported that Democratic strategists are increasingly desperate for President Joe Biden to directly and publicly confront former President Donald Trump for his repeated conspiracy theories that the 2020 election was stolen.

"During his first nine months in office, Biden has largely avoided attacking Trump by name, even as he has broadly criticized those sowing doubt about the electoral process and pushed for measures to safeguard voting rights," reported Francesca Chambers. "Some Democrats agree with Biden's posture, arguing that he should not provide oxygen to Trump and his baseless claims of election fraud when he is no longer in power. But others in the party say Biden should be more focused on combating efforts they see as undermining democracy, especially as Trump ramps up his political activity ahead of the 2022 and 2024 elections."

Texas universities with federal contracts are caught between Greg Abbott and Joe Biden over COVID-19 vaccine mandates

Many Texas universities — which collectively hold billions of dollars in federal contracts — are wrestling with how to navigate the Biden administration's mandate that all federal contractors be vaccinated by Dec. 8 in a state that bans vaccine mandates.

Several public universities — all managed by Gov. Greg Abbott appointees — told The Texas Tribune they are still evaluating the executive order, which applies to new federal contracts of $250,000 or greater and awarded as of Nov. 14 or existing contracts that have been renewed as of Oct. 15.

Yellen sees US inflation moderating by mid-to-late 2022

Inflation in the United States, pushed upward by pandemic-related supply and labor problems, should return to more moderate levels in the second half of next year, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Sunday.

With supply-chain woes slowing deliveries of a range of parts, including the semiconductors needed by automakers, and amid widespread labor shortages and still strong demand for products, US consumer prices in September were 5.4 percent higher than in the same month in 2020, raising concerns about economic recovery.

Former lawmaker explains why Trump will 'kneecap' the GOP 2024 presidential nominee if he bows out

Appearing on MSNBC on Sunday afternoon with host Alex Witt, former Rep. Dave Jolly (R-FL) laughed at the idea of Trump helping out the Republican Party if he decides to bow out of the 2024 GOP presidential sweepstakes.

Jolly, who left the House after skirmishing with the now-former president, said Trump will likely take a "pox upon both of your houses" stance if he bows out of politics due to either his legal problems or disinterest in running now that he has a possible money-making venture with his "TRUTH SOCIAL" media platform.
