Katie Miller, a podcast host and the wife of White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, posted a photo of her dinner on Wednesday. Critics said her timing was terrible.
“Grass-fed steak, asparagus and white sweet potatoes,” Miller wrote on X. The photo showed a cutting board piled with sliced steak.
Her post went up the same day a new inflation report came out and the Pew Research Center released a study finding that nearly half of Americans are struggling to afford basic necessities. The New York Times reported that nearly three-quarters of lower-income adults said they had trouble paying for food, housing, medical care or transportation in the past year. The Times also said higher gas prices tied to the war in Iran are still pushing costs up.
Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) listed rising gas, grocery and consumer prices.
“What are trump enablers focused on? See below,” Lieu wrote. “Another let them eat cake moment. November is coming.”
Former Rep. Barbara Comstock (R-Va.), a longtime Trump critic, linked to the Times story and tagged both Millers.
“In touch with the peeps,” Comstock wrote.
David Leavitt, a multimedia journalist whose bylines include CBS and Yahoo, said the post showed how out of touch the couple is.
“Most Americans are living paycheck to paycheck and you’re flaunting your wealth,” Leavitt wrote.
Robbie Sherwood, a former reporter who is now communications director for the Arizona House Democrats, took aim at the potatoes.
“NO POTATOES OF COLOR in the Antoinette household!” Sherwood wrote. “Perfect post for today’s inflation report.”
William Coffin, an Arizona political commentator who has appeared on “The Daily Show” and CNN, posted a photo of former Trump strategist Steve Bannon next to the steak.
“OK, OK, if you squint you can kind of see it!?” Coffin wrote on X.
