McConnell refusing to share millions in campaign cash with desperate colleagues: report

Despite the threat that Republicans could lose their majorities in both the House the Senate, former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is refusing to lift a finger to help his colleagues, according to reporting.

The Washington Sun reported that McConnell, the former Senate majority leader who took his seat in 1985, is “hoarding his committee’s wealth” during a crucial midterm cycle for Republicans, citing a new federal filing. When he returned to the Senate in September after a three-month, health-related absence, his campaign committee held nearly $7.4 million, the outlet said.

McConnell, who announced in February 2025 that he would not seek an eighth term, has not given any of it to a Republican Party committee or candidate campaign, the Sun reported. That includes the Senate Leadership Fund, the super PAC aligned with Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD), who succeeded McConnell as the party’s Senate leader.

McConnell leaves the Senate in January, and the Sun laid out what his committee can still do with the surplus. It can give up to "$2,000 apiece to other Republican candidate committees." It can transfer unlimited amounts to national party committees such as the Republican National Committee or the National Republican Senatorial Committee. It can also donate to charities or nonprofit universities, refund donors, or send the money to the U.S. Treasury’s general fund, the outlet said.

McConnell returned on Sept. 14 after being hospitalized in June. He has said he fell at home, was “briefly unconscious” and later contracted pneumonia.
