Recount reveals Michigan town had the wrong mayor in office for a year

A recount has suggested that the winner of last year's mayoral election in Hamtramck, Michigan was actually the other candidate all along.

Mayor Adam Alharbi was declared the winner of the 2025 election by 11 votes, WDIV reported. Thirty-seven ballots turned up in the city clerk’s office right after the vote and remained in dispute. A judge recently ordered them counted, and when they were tallied Friday, challenger Muhith Mahmood came out ahead.

That doesn’t make Mahmood mayor yet. The tally is unofficial and must still be certified, and a lawsuit over residency allegations is pending.

An earlier recount had actually widened Alharbi’s lead while the 37 ballots were still being contested.

Hamtramck, located in the Detroit metropolitan area, is one of the only cities in America with a majority Muslim population.
